White settler thinking places itself at the centre of history. It treats its own movement as progress, while holding indigenous histories in a frozen past. From that position it claims to be the driver of development, shifting between hero and victim as politics requires.

The record tells a different story. What gets called development grew out of land taken by force, labour extracted from those pushed into servitude, and knowledge lifted from societies that already knew how to live with that land. There is no settler progress that stands apart from this.

The foundation remains indigenous, even where it has been erased or renamed.

Indigenous refers to all African peoples who had settled on the land prior to European arrival.
