Topic of the Week: Positive Communication Between Parents and Children
Question of the Week:
“What can parents and caregivers do to create a home where children feel safe, valued, and comfortable sharing their thoughts, feelings, and challenges?”
Positive communication is at the heart of strong family relationships. When parents take time to listen, understand, and respond with empathy, children develop trust, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Children who feel heard and respected are more likely to seek guidance, express themselves openly, and make positive life choices.
As we continue our Nurturing Responsible Families project, we encourage every family to reflect on the role of communication in building safe, loving, and supportive homes where every child can thrive.
Every meaningful conversation is an opportunity to strengthen trust and nurture a child’s future.
Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

Week 4 – Nurturing Responsible Families
As we continue implementing our Nurturing Responsible Families project, we engaged parents and caregivers in discussions on the upbringing of a child in a safe, loving, and supportive home.
Major Question:
Why is it important for a child to grow up in a safe and loving home?
Answer:
A safe and loving home provides children with protection, care, guidance, and emotional support. It helps them build confidence, develop positive values, and grow into responsible and productive members of society. Children who are raised in nurturing family environments are more likely to thrive and reach their full potential.
Through this session, parents were encouraged to embrace positive parenting practices and create family environments where every child feels safe, valued, protected, and loved.
Strong families raise strong children, and strong children build strong communities.

We continue to end child abandonment in our communities by promoting responsible parenting, strengthening families, and ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, loving, and supportive environment.
Today, UPLUS is conducting a community activity focused on parents’ roles and responsibilities in child upbringing. This discussion is aligned with our project on Maturing Responsible Families, which seeks to strengthen families as the primary foundation for children’s growth, protection, and development.
The session emphasizes the importance of:
1. Positive parenting and guidance.
2. Providing love, care, and protection.
3. Supporting children’s education and well-being.
4. Promoting children’s participation and listening to their views.
5. Creating safe, nurturing, and responsible family environments.
Together, we can build stronger families that raise responsible, confident, and empowered children for a better future.

Yesterday! through the first cohort of the Nurturing Responsible Families project, we began by established community-based child protection structures with in the mothers in the community aimed at identifying and responding to risks of child abandonment and unnecessary family separation before they happen. These local structures are helping communities take collective responsibility in protecting vulnerable children and supporting at-risk families at the grassroots level.
The project is also empowering mothers and women with knowledge, safe reporting pathways, peer support, and referral mechanisms that enable them to speak up early and seek help before situations escalate into abandonment or separation. By strengthening community ownership, awareness, and accountability, we are building sustainable prevention systems that keep children safe, strengthen families, and promote long-term child wellbeing within their own communities.
Prevention begins when communities are empowered to protect their own children

Last week we successfully launched a new project ‘Nurturing Responsible Families’’ a community-based project aimed at strengthening vulnerable families and improving their social and economic welfare to prevent unnecessary child abandonment across Africa.
Our first cohort has officially begun with over 100 families enrolled in the program, including more than 100 mothers and 20 expectant mothers who will directly benefit from family strengthening, parenting support, economic empowerment, and community mentorship initiatives.
We believe that when families are supported, empowered, and equipped with opportunities, children can grow up in safe, loving, and stable homes. No child should be separated from their family simply because of poverty, lack of support, or social vulnerability.
Today, we are calling upon governments, organizations, development partners, religious institutions, community leaders, and every well-wisher to join us in this movement to end child abandonment in Africa. Together, we can restore dignity to families, protect children, and build stronger communities for future generations.
This is more than a project it is a movement for hope, protection, and lasting transformation.

Saturday marked the beginning of a movement bigger than all of us.
Through the launch of the Nurturing Responsible Families Project, we are taking a bold step toward ending unnecessary child abandonment, strengthening families, and building communities where every child grows up feeling safe, loved, and protected.
Too many children are separated from their families because of poverty, neglect, lack of support, and broken systems. It is time for all of us to rise together and become part of the solution.
This agenda cannot be achieved by one organization alone. It requires parents, leaders, young people, partners, organizations, faith leaders, social workers, and communities to come together with one shared purpose protecting families and giving children a better future.
I call upon everyone to come on board and support this important mission. Whether through partnership, advocacy, mentorship, volunteering, or resources, your contribution can help transform lives and keep families together.
Together, we can nurture responsible families, restore dignity, and create lasting change for generations to come.

This Easter, we are reminded that hope can rise even from the deepest pain.
“I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25–26) speaks not only to faith, but to restoration, new beginnings, and the power of love to overcome brokenness.
At UPLUS International, we carry this message into our mission standing with children, families, and communities to end child abandonment across Africa. Because every child deserves care, belonging, and a future filled with hope.
May this season renew our commitment to protect, support, and uplift the most vulnerable among us.

Child abandonment is a silent crisis affecting thousands of children across Uganda and beyond. Behind every statistic is a child carrying invisible wounds wounds of rejection, trauma, identity confusion, and emotional pain that can last a lifetime.
At UPLUS Empowerment and Transformation International, we speak not only from research, but from lived experience. Many young people grow up without stable parental care, and the impact follows them into adulthood affecting their education, mental health, relationships, and economic stability.
Ending child abandonment is not only about rescue it is about prevention. We must support vulnerable parents, reduce stigma against single mothers, strengthen community protection systems, and promote family-based care instead of institutionalization.
Every child deserves love, belonging, safety, and opportunity. Together, we can move from reaction to prevention. Together, we can build strong families and stronger communities.
Let us protect our children. Let us restore hope. Let us end child abandonment
As schools resume their academic programs, we remind all education institutions of their critical responsibility to provide safe, inclusive, and child-centred learning environments. A secure and supportive school setting is essential to keeping children in school and enabling them to learn with confidence and dignity.
When schools are unsafe or unresponsive to children’s needs, learners are more likely to drop out—exposing them to risks such as early marriage, early parenthood, family instability, and eventual child abandonment. These outcomes not only harm individual children but also weaken families and communities.
We therefore call upon all schools to strengthen child protection mechanisms, promote positive discipline, and foster environments where every child feels protected, valued, and supported. Keeping children safe in school is one of the most effective ways to prevent school dropouts and safeguard their future.
A safe school today builds stable families and stronger communities tomorrow.
