Chimamanda Adichie was recently asked in a New York Times interview how she feels about Nigeria after her son’s death last year. She said her feelings toward Nigeria had changed and she does not want to go back.
She has been trying to hold the hospital accountable, but the system is protecting the hospital and the healthcare official allegedly responsible for her son’s death. She was one of the few who so strongly believed in Nigeria. She had the influence, the money, everything, yet Nigeria happened to her. She has completely lost faith in the Nigeria she believed in.
Imagine the fate of the average Nigerian without connections or influence who faces similar experiences of a collapsed healthcare system, a corrupt judiciary, and police brutality every day. Imagine the pain, the grief, and the heartbreak. It is such a pity.
