📄 A Brief examination of a few Command Spell Designs.
The design choices for the individual command spells for Shirou, Kiritsugu, Bazett and Ayaka were definitely chosen quite carefully. Bazett and Ayaka somewhat have their resembling each other's.
I've seen people say Shirou's looks like Avalon. This is very plausible given is wider triangular and elongated look with the angular lines from the sides. It also reminds me of a knight arming sword. But more importantly it looks in part like a photo-negative, or might we say 'shadow', of the fleur-de-lys. The reason I say this is the two curves near the apex appearing to look like the outward curves and triangular point of this Medieval french symbol.
If it really is the fleur-de-lys, its more Marian symbolism making its way into the Fate franchise. Just as Saber's Prydwyen has emblazoned on it the Blessed Virgin Mary, and his clothes gifted from Tohsaka that originate from the church are the traditional Marian colours of white and ultramarine blue―likewise is the fleur-de-lys Marian symbolism associated with the Song of Solomon 2:2 "lily among thorns" (lilium inter spinas), understood as a reference to Mary.
Also note that the traditional Catholic Marian symbolism of the lilies is something Takeuchi has time and time again associated with Saber in all sorts of art pieces he's done of hers (which is also the reason I draw her with lilies).
Shirou's Command Seal being a blend of fleur-de-lys and Avalon would make perfect sense for Shirou. This way both i) Avalon, which to reiterate is quite a direct symbol itself for the infused habit of Divine love that grants one eternal life [unaffected by the 5 Great Magics in TM lore, grants the user immortality, grants Saber her salvation through loving Shirou], and ii) Marian symbolism unite Saber and Shirou together. And taken with iii) the rest of Saber's very overt theologial symbolism like Caliburn's crucifix and role in the narrative, the Seraphim emblazoned on her armor's chest plate, its very inkeeping with Takeuchi and Koyama's existing design choices (which I talk about in greater detail in my pinned thread).
Kiritsugu's Command Seals making a crucifix appears to be no accident. Though perhaps its a bit less subtle. Kiritsugu's role is quite literally his cross to bear in life, and not until the end when he uses his last command spell, destroying the illusion of his utilitarian morality in destroying the corrupt grail, does he begin to carry it well―quite literally "using the Cross".
What then makes me curious is Ayaka Sajyou and Bazett. Bazett's command spells look like Ayaka's. Ayaka's are explicitly said in the Fate/prototype official book to represent the angelic rank of Principalities.
St. Bonaventure judiciously appropriates the following qualities to the Principalities: governing sanctity, the power to strengthen, perfecting in action, teaching what ought to be pursued in life, the ability to lead (Col. in Hex, col. XXI, n. 23-33),
"The power to strengthen" and "perfecting in action" seem to be the most obvious one for servants in relation to their masters generally. Even more so, "the ability to lead". The "teaching what ought to be pursued in life" perhaps reflects best the question of what wants to do with the Holy Grail, but alas I myself can't see what it might reveal about Bazett or Ayaka in particular.
Let alone their apparent similarity.
But I do think that Ayaka's Principalities being the first Command spell in Nasu's mind, the antecedent to all the rest, is probably of worthwhile note in its own right.
Anyhow I hope this post was interesting. ☴
Thread on why I loved Arcueid's route in Tsukihime Remake. 🧵
I think the remake made me appreciate and love her story and character more than I ever have before. This includes the manga and the original route she had in Tsukihime, and I'd say her stuff in KT as well.
