Frankly, I would like to translate, in my own words, what Torishima-san is really trying to say.

His remarks are not simply criticism.

Over the years, Torishima-san has done much more than simply serve as Toriyama-sensei’s editor. He has maintained close communication with creators, editors, companies, and many other people involved in the creative process, dedicating himself to helping talented people develop better ideas and make the most of their abilities and potential.

He has also played an important role in supervising creative works, looking at projects as a whole and helping guide their direction.

Torishima-san has always been a very straightforward person. If something is good, he says it is good. If something is bad, he says it is bad. But most of the people involved in Japan were unable to say such things directly to Toriyama-sensei himself. The only person who could do that was Torishima-san.

His criticism is not intended to attack anyone. It comes from his desire to make the work better.

I believe Dragon Ball itself is one of the clearest examples of this.

From the very beginning of Dragon Ball, Torishima-san and Toriyama-sensei were in constant communication.

How could they make children even more excited?

How could they make the characters more memorable?

How should the panels be arranged?

Toriyama-sensei and Torishima-san discussed these questions over and over again, constantly thinking about how to improve the work. This was a creative process between two professionals.

Through countless conversations, decisions, and layers of editorial direction, the two of them built much of the foundation of Dragon Ball together.

Later, as Dragon Ball gradually evolved into a battle-focused manga and achieved enormous popularity, editors such as Kondo-san and Takeda-san took over that work.

Torishima-san entrusted the series to them, while continuing to support Dragon Ball and watch over its development.

I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that the Dragon Ball we know today exists not only because of Toriyama-sensei’s extraordinary creative talent, but also because of the accumulated work and dedication of the editors and many other people who supported him throughout the different stages of the series.

And Dragon Ball continued to evolve.

It became more powerful, more exciting, and more compelling, eventually growing into a work loved around the world.

Throughout that creative process, Torishima-san’s honesty, judgment, and willingness to tell creators directly what was working and what was not played an important role.

It is precisely because of that history and those facts that I trust Torishima-san’s words.

So when Torishima-san makes a critical remark, I do not simply hear him saying:

“This is bad.”

What I hear behind his words is:

“I want this work to become better.”

“I want the true appeal and essence of this work to reach the fans and readers properly.”

And of course, on a platform like X, where the number of characters is limited, it is impossible to explain half a century of experience, history, and accumulated thought in a single short post.

That is why I am looking forward to hearing Torishima-san speak about this again, in his own words, with enough time to explain himself fully.

Whether on YouTube, radio, or anywhere else where he can speak more freely, I believe the true meaning behind his recent remarks will become much clearer.

When we look at the history of Torishima-san and Dragon Ball, I believe there is one conviction that has always remained at the heart of his criticism.

Above all, he puts the readers and fans who receive these works first.

He wants to give readers, fans, and children something they can enjoy more deeply, something that will stay in their hearts.

I truly believe that this attitude of putting readers and fans above everything else is at the very heart of what Torishima-san is trying to express.
