What if he accepted early on that she was too good for him, so he tried to distract himself with others?
What if he even went as far as to tell her about the others if only to make conversation?
What if all along she already felt something but was waiting for him to confess?
What if when he started telling her about others, she thought she had misread the signs and just decided to be supportive?
What if her support towards his seeking others served as confirmation to him that she really didn’t feel anything for him?

Then 10 years later, we’re here to reveal she never misread the signs and he had misunderstood everything.
