In January 2004, Jennifer Aniston told Diane Sawyer she couldn’t imagine being with any other human being. That same month, Brad Pitt started filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie.

Friends was weeks from its final taping. Aniston had just topped Forbes’ list of the most powerful stars in Hollywood. She and Pitt had moved into a 12,000-square-foot house he redesigned himself. Her own mother wasn’t invited to the wedding.

In the video below, Sawyer plays her an old clip of Pitt talking about love. “If you find yourself going another way… be honest. Otherwise you’re better off alone.”

Aniston laughs off the tabloids. Read the magazines, she jokes, and you’d think “we were divorced and moving into different homes.”

“I married him because he was the love of my life.”

Then she talks about kids. After Friends, she says.

Less than a year later, on January 7, 2005, they announced their separation. The divorce was final that October. Pitt went on to raise six children — with Jolie.

They had met as kids on the Mickey Mouse Club. She had told the world she was saving herself for marriage. Timberlake had just released “Cry Me a River,” with a Britney lookalike in the video, and gone on TV to say she broke his heart.

In the video below, Diane Sawyer reads Britney’s own lyrics back to her and asks who they’re about. She can barely get a word out. Then Sawyer goes further.

“You did something that caused him so much pain, so much suffering. What did you do?”

Britney says they were both too young, and that she’ll always love him. Sawyer brings up the fact that she’d once said she had only slept with one person. The 21-year-old fights back tears on national television while Sawyer keeps pushing. She says Justin called her, supposedly to catch up, and casually mentioned her lookalike would be starring in his new video.

In 2021, after the documentary Framing Britney Spears, Timberlake publicly apologized. In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Britney wrote that she’d had an abortion while they were together, because he said they weren’t ready. She called the Sawyer interview a breaking point and said she felt exploited.

In November 2015, a year after their wedding, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt sat down with Tom Brokaw at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles to promote their new film, a movie about a marriage falling apart. “If it was close to us at all, we could never make this film,” Jolie said. “We’re actually very, very stable, and these aren’t our issues.” Ten months later, she filed for divorce.

They had married in August 2014 at their French estate, Château Miraval, and her wedding veil was covered in drawings by their kids. Then they flew to Malta and shot By the Sea on their honeymoon. She wrote and directed it, credited as Angelina Jolie Pitt. Brokaw called theirs “one of the most secure marriages in Hollywood.”

In the video below, they joke about her trying to learn to cook (“she has no business in the kitchen”) and about what ten years together will do to a couple. Then it turns serious. In March 2015, while she was editing the film, her doctor called: another blood test showed possible signs of early ovarian cancer, the disease that killed her mother. Pitt was in France. “Angie called me and I got straight on a plane.” The surgeon who removed her ovaries was her mother’s old doctor, who had once promised her mother she’d look after her.

On September 14, 2016, the family was on a private jet flying from France to Los Angeles. Five days later, Jolie filed for divorce. The FBI looked into what happened on that flight and filed no charges. The divorce took eight years, and several of their children have since dropped Pitt’s name.

But watch Pitt while she talks. He says seeing his wife have to be her strongest was “terribly moving,” that there was “no vanity” in how she faced it, that whatever had to be done to keep the family together “as long as possible” would be done. And she says he made it clear what a woman meant to him: someone smart and capable who cared about her family, not a body. “My husband wasn’t going to let that happen.”

Was that the look of a man still completely in love, or a man trying hard to keep something together that was already slipping away?

It’s pretty amazing that Brad Pitt was so much better looking than his wife that he’s still too good looking for her in his 60’s with her in her prime.

It’ only took being an old man to finally find a woman to be on par with him in looks.
