Hanssen’s father, Howard, was a Chicago police officer who was emotionally abusive, which may have influenced Hanssen’s later actions.
Hanssen’s espionage activities were not limited to selling classified documents. He also revealed the existence of a multimillion-dollar eavesdropping tunnel built by the FBI under the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C. This tunnel was intended to gather intelligence on Soviet activities but was rendered useless once Hanssen disclosed its existence to the KGB.
Hanssen utilized a Palm Pilot to store and transfer classified information. This device, which was relatively advanced for its time, allowed him to manage his espionage activities discreetly.
