What have I really done with Ramadan? It is a question you may be asking yourself, a pressing question that is weighing heavily on your mind.

More than half of Ramadan has passed, it has slipped through our fingers, some of us started strong and are still going strong, some of us are struggling and some of us feel deep regret and disappointment feeling as though they wasted precious days they will never get back.

This feeling you have right now, the regret, the urgency, the fear of missing out, this is a mercy from Allah.

Do not despair dear Muslim brother or sister, know that there is still hope and there is still time. Here is the truth:

What matters is not how Ramadan started. What matters is how it ends.

Allah says:

فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَيْرَاتِ

“So race towards all that is good.” (Qur’an 2:148)

The race is not over yet but the finish line is fast approaching and the final moments matter the most.

Notice how Allah uses the word: Race.

A race means there are people striving and competing.

A race means there is a finish line.

A race means people will finish in different positions.

Anyone who has ever watched a race understands this powerful concept:

The fastest running happens at the end.

Ibn al-Jawzi said:

قال ابن الجوزي:
إِنَّ الْخَيْلَ إِذَا دَنَتْ مِنْ غَايَةِ الْمِضْمَارِ بَذَلَتْ جُهْدَهَا لِتَسْبِقَ، فَلَا تَكُنِ الْخَيْلُ أَفْطَنَ مِنْكَ،
فَإِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالْخَوَاتِيمِ.

“When horses approach the end of the race track, they exert their utmost effort to win. So do not let the horse be more intelligent than you, for actions are judged by their endings.”

How will you be judged?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالْخَوَاتِيمِ

“Indeed, actions are judged by their endings.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Not by how they began. Not by how strong the first days were. But by how they finish.

The most powerful nights of Ramadan, the most valuable nights of the entire year are still ahead of you.

Know that Allah frees people from the hellfire every night of Ramadan, you still have time, know that your chance to be freed from the hellfire awaits you.

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ عُتَقَاءَ مِنَ النَّارِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ مِنْ رَمَضَان

“Indeed Allah frees people from the Fire every day and night during Ramadan.”

A comforting reminder from the early scholars:

إِنَّمَا الْعِبْرَةُ بِكَمَالِ النِّهَايَاتِ لَا بِنَقْصِ الْبِدَايَاتِ

“What matters is the perfection of the ending, not the shortcomings of the beginning.”

The Prophet ﷺ said:

تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

“Seek Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.”

(Bukhari & Muslim)

Laylatul Qadr. A single night. Better than a thousand months. Better than 83 years of worship. One night where duʿa is accepted. One night where sins are forgiven. One night that could change your entire akhirah. It may still be waiting for you.

Know that Allah frees people from the hellfire every night of Ramadan, you still have more nights, your chance to be freed from the hellfire awaits you.

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ عُتَقَاءَ مِنَ النَّارِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ مِنْ رَمَضَان

“Indeed Allah frees people from the Fire every day and night during Ramadan.”

(Musnad Ahmad)

Pause and reflect over that.

You might feel like you wasted the beginning of Ramadan, but Allah, through His vast mercy towards us, placed the greatest opportunity at the end.

Al-Hasan al-Basri said:

أَحْسِنُوا فِيمَا بَقِيَ يُغْفَرْ لَكُمْ مَا مَضَى

“Do well in what remains, and you will be forgiven for what has passed.”

Let this reality comfort you. Know that there is still a chance for you to make this your best Ramadan yet. Let go of the past and fix the future.

Remind yourself that a weak beginning can be erased by a powerful ending. Missed days and nights can be wiped away by sincere repentance. Your shortcomings can be replaced with mercy.

This is not wishful thinking, it is not far fetched and it is certainly not impossible.
