Sheikh Naim Qassem, we will not allow you to appoint yourselves guardians of the Republic when you have usurped its authority and subordinated its decisions to Iran. Those who dragged Lebanon into wars and left its people to pay the price have no standing to judge the President in the name of the Constitution or hold the government responsible for a catastrophe they themselves caused. The Constitution is not a tool for blackmailing the state. Nor is the Taif Agreement a text you can invoke to attack legitimate institutions while ignoring its requirement to surrender your weapons. Before questioning the state about its duties, end your stranglehold over it and hand over your arms.
We stand firmly beside President Joseph Aoun and support every step he takes to restore state sovereignty and protect the Lebanese people. What he, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and the government have accomplished so far puts Lebanon on the right path toward restoring its institutions, reclaiming its national decision-making and rebuilding the confidence of its Arab partners and international friends. These efforts deserve support. We will not allow your campaigns to obstruct them or force the state back into submission to your conditions.
You ask those who defend Lebanon’s sovereignty what they have done to protect it. We demand a state that protects its citizens. You insist on keeping weapons for which the Lebanese have paid with their lives, homes and livelihoods. What have these weapons achieved for the people of the South? Where is the security you promised them? What kind of victory is measured in more destroyed villages and displaced families?
We want Hezbollah disarmed before anyone else in the world does, because its weapons have devastated Lebanon, destroyed its people’s future and stripped the state of its authority. We are also the first to demand a complete Israeli withdrawal, and we will not accept Israel remaining on a single inch of Lebanese soil. Protecting our land and our people is the responsibility of the state and its army. It does not give you the right to hold the South hostage to an Iranian agenda.
Your insistence that the land must be liberated and people must return before you surrender your weapons is a recipe for keeping Lebanon trapped in catastrophe indefinitely. You cannot obstruct the state’s authority and then demand that it rescue the country, or hold its decisions hostage and then condemn its inability to act. Bringing people home and rebuilding their houses requires a state that controls its own decisions and regains the trust of the Lebanese people, the Arab world and the international community.
When you speak of economic collapse, electricity and people’s rights, remember that you and your allies were at the heart of the power structure that brought Lebanon to this point. The responsibility of the political and banking establishment does not absolve you, and yours does not absolve them. Saving Lebanon requires ending armed power outside state authority, holding corruption to account and pursuing financial reforms that restore depositors’ rights instead of protecting the powerful.
Enough of turning Lebanon into a battleground, the South into a shield and people’s suffering into an excuse to keep your weapons. The demands are clear: surrender your arms, dismantle Hezbollah’s military and security apparatus, and place decisions of war and peace exclusively in the hands of the state. The Lebanese deserve life, security and peace. We will not accept a future that remains hostage to decisions made in Tehran.
