Mind the Gap: The Radical Power of Second Chances
My @TEDTalks for @TEDxCulverCity is about my journey from prison to politics and the people in my life who chose love over fear and judgment. https://t.co/l3PKBZuDep
.@GovKathyHochul says she was involved in shaping the “Clean Slate” bill, a stronger indication Hochul is leaning toward signing it, after previously being non-committal. Says the business community ( who are shielded from liability in the legislation ) really wants it.
Words can’t express my deepest gratitude bro!! @senatormyrie Thank you for not being a “politician”. @cheastie it’s your turn! Do the right thing! Do the human thing!
#CleanSlateNY is economic justice. Proud to vote to pass this historic reform in the @NYSenate yesterday. Thank you @zellnor4ny and @CatalinaCruzNY for your stewardship, @AndreaSCousins, and all of the tireless advocates who fought to get this done. https://t.co/4vfTcVzLqL

When people point to the number of people in overpoliced communities who call 911 as evidence that people in overpoliced communities want policing, I think: Would people still call 911 if they had or knew they had another safer option that actually prevents crime & heals trauma?
My life story has been quite radical, from being incarcerated to becoming a political press secretary and now the Global CMO @RGA. I use storytelling to advocate for people and for justice - that’s why I’m here. My chat with @joshwmarcus for @Independent https://t.co/zstFtl21mQ
Brave formerly-incarcerated New Yorkers like @zakithebarber, @Ash_Prashar and many others have spoken up and spoken out about the very real, lifelong costs of a criminal conviction.
After they've served their time, what other debt do they owe?

These days in politics, consensus is hard to find. On criminal justice issues, it’s almost unheard of.
But for the past two years, the #CleanSlate coalition has grown to include voices from every sector, every perspective, every corner of NYS.
It’s unprecedented. 🧵
Here is a very clear expression of why the coalition-backed bill (S1553c/A6399b) is so important. It provides real relief in real time. Take a look at our comparison chart.
TWEET, CALL, & EMAIL your legislators today to tell to support the coalition-backed Clean Slate Act.
In NY, Dem lawmakers & Governor are gunning to kill bail reform. Based on police lies tying bail reform to crime. Not facts. And they know this. So: 1000s more Black & Brown people may be jailed pretrial solely bc of police lies. And so police will keep lying to influence policy.
I’m sounding the alarm. For years police have been brazenly lying. Manufacturing damaging falsehoods tying NY bail reform to crime. They’ve been caught in these lies multiple times. Admitted they lied. Yet now Democratic lawmakers on brink of killing bail reform based on them.
2. That same week, the Governor of New York pandered to police lies & fear, & demanded NY lawmakers kill bail reform, reclassify 16 year olds as adults in the criminal system, & indefinitely cage people w/ mental health issues. All to win the Governor’s race at all costs.
A story in two parts:
1. The Governor of New York-Kathy Hochul-wrote a powerful oped rejecting years of police lies that falsely blamed bail reform for violent crime. She stood up for truth & defended bail reform’s success in maximizing freedom, fairness, cost savings, & safety.
