[Barack Obama @BarackObama]

Today, some of the books that shaped my life—and the lives of so many others—are being challenged by people who disagree with certain ideas or perspectives. And librarians are on the front lines, fighting every day to make the widest possible range of viewpoints, opinions, and ideas available to everyone.

[The Hotshot Wake Up @HotshotWake]

About 183 people have asked me to talk about the smoke from Canada coming into New York, New Jersey, and other Eastern States...
#wildfire #NY
Ok, here goes…

*Seinfeld voice: “What’s up with all that wildfire smoke?”

If you live in these areas, welcome to what Salmon, Idaho was all last summer. Literally months.

Welcome to small town Montana. Welcome to the Utah Valley.
Welcome to the Pacific Northwest in August.
Welcome to Happy Camp, California.

Welcome to Earth… There are a lot of fires burning in Canada. Many are lightning caused but the majority are human caused. Pile burn escapes, escaped campfires, escaped prescribed burns, and yes, arson.

There are not a lot of fires burning in the United States. It’s actually one of the slowest starts to fire season in the U.S. in decades.

Wildfires happen across the entire planet. It’s a natural cycle that ebbs and flows. Canada is busy this year, others places not so much.

This is what wildland firefighters wake up to every day. This is what they work in. They are the ones trying to contain these fires when they happen. Smokejumpers and Hotshots, 6 pack jacked men and women, who sleep in the dirt every night just to wake up and crush up a mountain and work in smoke.

The ones that were promised a raise and Congress sits idly by. The ones that were told recruitment, retention, and pay was priority #1.

Seemingly not…

The ones who are provided subpar food and eat military rations for breakfast. At least you can still get a delicious bagel and lox before you walk through the smoke.
*extra capers.

So once the smoke clears out, in due time, remember that there are men and women fighting these things. Remember that your representatives have denied them a raise because “other priorities.”

Some are trying to help. These representatives are supporting a Bill called Tim’s Act. In long form it’s known as the “Tim Hart Wildland Firefighter Classification and Pay Parity Act”.

If you would like to help support these men and women who wake up and work in this type of smoke everyday, contact your Rep. and tell them to support Tim’s Act.

The smoke will clear out. It always does. Welcome to Earth.

Today, America honors the soldiers who have fought to defend this flag.

I am in awe of them but wish they and their families did not have to bear the burdens of war.

They fought so that we could pursue a more perfect union where all people are created equal. So let’s build that union.

[Sam Schwartz @samschwartz03]

🧵 In 2018, my cousin & best friend Alex Schachter was killed by a gunman with an AR15 in Parkland. I am sick & tired of congressional inaction. On June 6th, I will sit-in at the US Capitol to demand a vote to #BanAssaultWeapons. I invite others to join me.

[Lisa Pecoraro Deegan @LMDeegan]

Another loss due to ALS…my friend lost his sister, a 8 year old boy lost his mom, boys and girls lost their auntie, a husband lost his wife. When will this end??? #als #cureals #treatment #help

[Ben Stiller @BenStiller]

No, you can #BanAssaultWeaponsNow.

[Steve Martin @UnrealBluegrass]

We've seen few humans this devoted and humble as Jimmy Carter.
Quietly continuing his mission, which was to do good.
If you must leave us go gently . Leave your heart and bravery so we might learn.
Thank you President Carter.
Jimmy.

@HamlinIsland Beautifully said. ❤️❤️❤️

[Reese Witherspoon @ReeseW]

Anti-semitism in any form is deplorable. In person. Online. Doesn't matter where. It's hate and it's unacceptable.

[Ana Navarro-Cárdenas @ananavarro]

Emmett Till (July 25, 1941 – August 28, 1955) was a 14-year-old African American boy who was abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after being falsely accused of offending a white woman in her family's grocery store.

Today would have been his 81st birthday.

[Zak Williams @zakwilliams]

Happy 71st Birthday Dad! I'll be remembering you today as you would want to be remembered, in spandex. Miss you and love you always!

[The Dangerous Ones @DangerousOnesHQ]

Wow! Huge thank you to @SRuhle for playing our film #AwakenDawn (in its entirety) on The @11thHour tonight.

This is not a movie.
This is real life.

[Gavin Newsom @GavinNewsom]

14 children and a teacher dead.

Another shooting. And the GOP won’t do a damn thing about it.

Who the hell are we if we cannot keep our kids safe.

This is preventable. Our inaction is a choice.

We need nationwide, comprehensive, commonsense gun safety NOW.

[lz @zambranolala]

@steveohrourke Agree, very sickening! Sad times, disgust that this has become a political and religious decision. This will hurt so many women especially younger and marginalized women 😡😡

[Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський @ZelenskyyUa]

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Brent Renaud who lost his life while documenting the ruthlessness & evil inflicted upon 🇺🇦 people by Russia. May Brent’s life & sacrifice inspire the world to stand up in fight for the forces of light against forces of darkness.

[Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський @ZelenskyyUa]

"We have teenagers Facetiming with their parents to tell them goodbye because they have Covid and can't come to the hospital. We never saw that amount of young death before. We have people stacking up for care, which we never had to do." -Dr. Catherine O'Neal

The most important facts for you to remember today:

Less than 0.001% of those fully vaccinated have had a fatal breakthrough case.

Less than 0.004% of those fully vaccinated have been hospitalIzed.

The vaccines work.

The vaccines are your best protection from the virus.
