Hari ini 84 tahun yang lalu, Jepun mendarat di Kota Bharu, Kelantan, permulaan kepada penjajahan mereka di Tanah Melayu.

Kelantan pada 1941 mempunyai 3 pengkalan udara Tentera Udara Diraja British (RAF) & Tentera Udara Diraja Australia (RAAF) - di Kota Bharu, Gong Kedak & Machang. Berada di utara pantai timur menjadikannya lokasi strategik untuk Jepun mendaratkan tenteranya.

Maka pada 4 Disember, sebahagian angkatan Tentera Darat Ke-25 Jepun pimpinan Jen. Tomoyuki Yamashita berlepas dari Hainan sebelum konvoi disertai pasukan tambahan dari Saigon. 5,300 tentera dihantar untuk memulakan gelombang penaklukan di Tanah Melayu.

Konvoi ini dikesan oleh pesawat peninjau RAAF pada 6 Disember, kemudian sekali lagi pada esoknya oleh pesawat RAF. Namun pesawat Catalina RAF itu dibedil 5 pesawat Nakajima sebelum sempat ia menghantar mesej ke pangkalan di Singapura.

Lantas hala tuju konvoi Jepun itu tidak dapat dibaca oleh British, maka mereka teragak-agak untuk melancarkan sebarang pelan khususnya Operasi Matador - kerahan kekuatan ke sempatan Siam. Khuatir jika jangkaan meleset, hubungan dengan Siam menjadi keruh.

Pada tengah malam 7/8 Disember, konvoi Jepun itu tiba di perairan Kelantan, melabuhkan sauhnya 3km dari darat & memulakan misi penaklukan pada sekitar 12:30 malam dengan membedil pertahanan di Pantai Sabak & Pantai Pak Amat.

Pertahanan yang dibentuk angkatan Tentera India British dengan sokongan skuadron Australia & New Zealand berupaya menahan gelombang pendaratan tentera Jepun sehingga siang, namun bocor jua selepas semakin ramai musuh membuat pendaratan.

Cubaan untuk menutup kembali kebocoran pertahanan itu gagal apabila menjelang tengah pagi, seluruh 3 batalion tentera Jepun berjaya mendarat. Akhirnya British terpaksa berundur & Jepun terus mara untuk menakluk bandar Kota Bharu pada 9 Disember.

Dengan sekitar 320 kematian & 538 kecederaan di pihaknya (berbanding hanya kira-kira 68 mati & 360 cedera di pihak British), Jepun menyifatkan pertempuran di pantai Kota Bharu itu antara yang terdahsyat dalam kempen mereka menakluk Tanah Melayu.
