ISWAP Commanders Clash in Timbuktu Triangle, Several Feared Dead
By: Zagazola Makama
The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has been hit by a violent internal power struggle in its stronghold within the Timbuktu Triangle, with several fighters reportedly killed after rival commanders turned their weapons on one another over a disagreement on a planned attack.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the clash occurred on Friday, June 27, following a heated dispute between senior field commanders over the conduct of an operation that had been scheduled for the previous night.
According to the sources, one of the commanders, identified simply as Abu Ali, reportedly refused to allow fighters under his control to participate in the planned attack. His decision was said to have angered another senior commander, who accused him of deliberately frustrating the operation and questioned his loyalty to the group.
What began as an argument between the rival factions quickly degenerated into an exchange of gunfire inside the group’s enclave in the Timbuktu Triangle, one of ISWAP’s most fortified hideouts in the Lake Chad region.
Multiple intelligence sources familiar with developments in the area said several fighters were killed during the confrontation, while one of the rival commanders is believed to have died from injuries sustained in the clash. Security agencies are still working to establish the identities of those involved and determine the full casualty figure.
The incident marks one of the most serious cases of internal fighting recorded within ISWAP in recent months and points to growing cracks in the group’s command structure.
Sources said the dispute was not an isolated disagreement but the culmination of weeks of rising tension among commanders over operational decisions, dwindling resources and the management of logistics inside the enclave.
Sources believe the refusal to approve the planned attack merely exposed deeper grievances that had been building within the organisation, with rival commanders increasingly competing for influence, manpower and control of supplies.
The Timbuktu Triangle has for years remained one of ISWAP’s principal operational bases, serving as a sanctuary for commanders, training camps and logistics hubs from where attacks are coordinated across parts of the Lake Chad Basin. Any disruption to command within the enclave is therefore considered significant from an operational standpoint.
Security sources said the latest confrontation is expected to affect the group’s ability to coordinate attacks in the immediate term as distrust spreads among commanders and fighters.
“The incident has created divisions within the camp. There is now suspicion among different factions, and this could affect decision-making, logistics and operational planning until the leadership is able to reassert control,” one intelligence source familiar with the situation said.
There are also concerns that the killing of a senior figure could trigger retaliatory attacks within the group, as loyalists seek revenge against those they hold responsible. Such reprisals have historically deepened divisions within terrorist organisations and weakened internal cohesion.
The latest development reflects the cumulative pressure ISWAP has come under in recent months as sustained military operations continue to target its commanders, logistics networks and freedom of movement across the Lake Chad region.
Although the group remains capable of carrying out attacks, security analysts believe persistent military pressure has increased competition over scarce resources and intensified mistrust among field commanders, creating conditions for internal conflict.
The incident offers a rare glimpse into the growing strains within one of the region’s most organised terrorist groups, suggesting that, beyond the battlefield, ISWAP is increasingly confronting a struggle for cohesion and control from within.
After Owo, Katsina Death Sentences, Kogi Court Imposes Maximum Penalty On Man Arrested By DSS For Kidnapping, Murdering Neighbour
By: Zagazola Makama
Barely 24 hours after a Katsina State High Court sentenced to death a female arms courier arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS), a High Court of Kogi State has also imposed the death penalty on a man the DSS successfully prosecuted for kidnapping and murdering his neighbour, who ran a hotel in Obajana.
The Katsina and Kogi sentences came less than two weeks after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, imposed the death penalty on four men arrested by the DSS for carrying out the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
The Kogi court, presided over by Justice Abdul Nicodemus Awulu, on Tuesday, found Jibrin Halilu guilty on the charges of conspiracy and kidnapping, in contravention of Sections 12, 6 (1), and 4 (3)(a) of the Kogi State Kidnapping and Other Related Offences Prohibition Law, 2023. The court subsequently sentenced Halilu to death.
According to the prosecution, on March 23, 2023, Halilu and other members of his armed gang stormed Ever Ready hotel, Angwa-Tiv, in Obajana town,
abducting the proprietor, Uche Andrew Offo. Even though Offo's family handed his abductors the N2.5 million ransom they demanded, they, nonetheless, killed him.
The DSS prosecutor told the court that operatives of the Service arrested Halilu on December 4, 2025.
"DSS investigations revealed that, while with his abductors, Offo was able to identify Halilu, who happened to be his neighbour, as being part of those who kidnapped him. That was when Halilu, despite the N2.5 million ransom he collected from Offo's family, still killed him.
"Further investigations by the DSS also linked Halilu and his gang to the April 2, 2023 kidnapping of one Ibrahim Abdullahi, a resident of Oshokoshoko Community in Lokoja, from whom the gang collected a N5 million ransom," a source also revealed.
The Kogi and Katsina convictions and sentencings come on the heels of a June 3, 2026, landmark verdict by a Federal High Court in Abuja sentencing four men to death for their roles in the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
The court sentenced the quartet of Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, and Abdulhaleem Idris to death by hanging for the attack which resulted in the death of over 40 worshippers and left over 100 persons injured.
"These convictions mark a significant run of courtroom victories for the DSS, reinforcing the message that those who engage in terrorism, kidnapping, and armed violence will not only be caught, but will be prosecuted and made to face the full consequences of their actions," the source declared.

The sentencing came just as a woman, Halima Haliru Umar, who also was arrested by DSS operatives, before a Federal High Court in Abuja, pleaded guilty to the illegal possession of 302 rounds of live ammunition.
The arrest of the convicts in Taraba State came on the heels of intelligence which blew the lid off their plans to transport arms and ammunition from Bantaje village in Wukari LGA, Taraba State, for delivery to a certain bandit kingpin still at large.

Thereafter, the trial judge, Justice Haywa Joseph Yilwatda adjourned the matter till May 8, 2025, for sentencing.
Earlier, the DSS' witness had narrated how the suspect was arrested in Plateau State while in possession of 302 live rounds of ammunition which she was to courier to one Sani He tendered the ammunition, the investigation report, the defendant's statements, and money recovered from her.
"The operations underscore the ongoing efforts by the DSS to disrupt arms supply chains linked to banditry and terrorism in Nigeria," declared the source.

Five ISWAP commanders among over 50 terrorists killed as troops repel major terrorist offensive in Borno
By: Zagazola Makama
Five notorious Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) field commanders have been confirmed among 50 ISWAP killed as troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) repelled multiple coordinated terrorist attacks across Borno and Yobe States in what military sources describe as the biggest defeat suffered by the insurgent group this year.
The slain commanders, identified as Ari Kolo (Munzir Abbagajiri), Ya Muhammad (from Dosula), Abu Aisha (from Abba Gajiri), Hamzalah (Qaid at Gambo Gege and Faruk Village) and Abu Rijal (from Dosula), were neutralised during simultaneous battles that raged through the early hours of Thursday in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo and Katarko.
Intelligence gathered by Zagazola Makama revealed that the ISWAP units that launched the attacks had moved in from the Cameroon axis, while other elements converged from the Timbuktu Triangle, a notorious terrorist enclave.
The terrorists attacking the troops from all flanks were met with devastating responses from the Air and ground troops who engaged them in a gun battle for more than four hours. In Kararko, Dikwa and Gajibo, the troops responses were decisive as they eliminated most of the terrorists. In Mafa, the terrorists were able to infiltrate into the troops location, burning some vehicles.
Military intelligence described the five as key battlefield tacticians responsible for several previous attacks on military bases, ambushes on patrol convoys and the deployment of drone-assisted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the North East.
They said the elimination of the commanders marked “a decisive degradation of ISWAP’s tactical and command structure in the theatre.”
“These five commanders coordinated the latest failed offensive from different axes, deploying RPGs, anti-aircraft guns, and suicide units in an attempt to overrun troop locations in Dikwa, Mafa and Katarko. But they met their waterloo in a massive combined air and ground counter-assault that left dozens of their fighters dead,” the source said.
According to official confirmation from the Joint Task Force North East (OPHK), a total of 62 terrorists have so far been killed, while clearance and exploitation operations were still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of OPHK, said the coordinated offensive by the terrorists began around midnight and lasted until about 0400 hours. The troops, backed by precision airstrikes from the Air Component Command, fought gallantly and repelled the attacks, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.
He said troops recovered 38 AK-47 rifles, seven PKT machine guns, five RPG tubes, two GPMGs, hand grenades and thousands of rounds of assorted ammunition after the engagement.
Zagazola’s assessments show that the neutralised commanders held significant influence within ISWAP’s northern command structure.
Ari Kolo, also known as Munzir Abbagajiri, was one of ISWAP’s most experienced field strategists, previously coordinating ambush operations around the Dikwa–Gajibo axis.
Ya Muhammad and Abu Rijal, both from Dosula, were veteran anti-air (AA) and logistics coordinators known for manning heavy-calibre weapons during major assaults.
Abu Aisha, from Abba Gajiri, was reputed for his role in rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) operations and had led several raids on remote bases in the Lake Chad area. Hamzalah, described as the Qaid (local commander) of Gambo Gege and Faruk villages, oversaw recruitment and coordination of fighters in the northern fringes of Borno.
The deaths would significantly weaken ISWAP’s operational capacity and disrupt upcoming coordinated attacks reportedly being planned in Dikwa, Rann, Kala Balge, and border areas with Cameroon and Chad.
