Farmers have figured out that the cheapest pesticide is a strip of flowers.

When you plant wildflowers through a crop field, not just around the edge but in strips running through the middle, you get ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps living in the field instead of visiting it.

They eat the aphids, the caterpillars, and the mites for free, all summer long.

In controlled trials, fields with tailored flower strips had leaf-beetle numbers 40 to 50% lower and crop damage cut by around 60%, enough to drop below the threshold where spraying was even considered worth it.

The flowers attract a standing army to our fields.

We spent decades engineering chemicals to kill the insects eating the crop, when the insects that eat those insects would have worked for the price of seed.

My old head Red Hook roommate knew a local beekeeper who kept their hives near the maraschino cherry factory by Valentino park. One year their bees and honey started turning bright red, tasting weird and no one could figure out why. Eventually they realized the bees were getting into syrup waste that oozed into the street from the cherry factory, so they tested the honey which came back full of Red #40, the same dye used in maraschino cherries

They filed an environmental complaint which kicked off more scrutiny of the factory, and when investigators searched the place they discovered a huge illegal weed grow beneath it. The owner (known as the “Cherry King”) shot himself when nypd confronted him during the raid. There’s still red goo that oozes out from under the roll-up gates

Lack of interest because it is not entertaining and fun, lack of care, desensitization, maybe posts are not being seen, I just do not know anymore. 14 babies living a horrible life on the streets injured, sick, starving, flea infestation, worms, diarrhea, fever, prolapsed rectum, each except 1 having 3 vet visits now are safe, warm, fed inside within the last month. Mon, Tues, Wed, today at vet for sickness. I understand most maybe do not have $5, $10 to spare, but a retweet is free and I even have to beg for that. I don’t know how many people just brought 14 cats into their home, instead dumping at a shelter or just walking by… and all year round every year. PLEASE share. Compassion Fatigue is real. Lift my spirits or anything to help these babies move through their journey. Maybe someone will be interested in adopting, sponsoring, sending food, helping with vet care…Thank you🙏💔
