What's crazy about socities like Saudi or the Gulf is the native people don't work. It's 50 million people living off oil money.
But it's not like they are creating great art. There's no interesting films. Songs. Literature. Games.
It's just guys hanging out all day
One thing that doesn’t seem to be addressed is why everyone says it’s unsafe to convene to discuss in person when the whole point is an argument about a bar that exists in person
France is light-years ahead of the cheating scandal game, we have political affairs such as “leading homeschooling activist and tradcath married mother-of-four gets accused of domestic violence by her formerly far-right Greco-Roman Neo-Pagan violinist mistress.”
Amazing country.
It’s very odd to me how much men reward attention seeking, self centeredness, pettiness, and vanity, even the very high quality men in my circles. you say you want deep bond with your wife, a true partner, you have ridiculously high standards for yourself and every other relationship in your life, but somehow you don’t get the ick from women whose main hobby is taking carefully posed selfies every other day and posting them on social media.
only by breaking the bank lmaoo definitely untrue under like 400k, even at 400k-800k it would be wildly financially irresponsible and "living paycheck to paycheck" if you act like this
It's incredible how fast the utility of money decreases after a certain level of wealth. You can get the exact same bag, clothes, personal trainer and almost the same flight experience with a good business class and only make a couple hundred k a year.
- Germanic, ‘earn/deserve’ money: a moral weight from working
- American, ‘make’ money: new wealth is created, not a fixed pie
- Latin: ‘win’ money: you gain by taking it from others, zero-sum fixed pie
No comment is even needed on this one
A phenomenon I’ve observed over time is that every time I’ve met someone who has a huge & specific grievance about ‘how people are’ vs how they ought to be, that person is almost always eliciting the behavior from others without realizing it.
I.e. Once met someone who was HUGE on inclusivity in communities & never kicking anyone out. Meeting them, I thought ‘sure that’s a nice value.’ Down the line, saw firsthand that they had patterns of instigating conflict unnecessarily, seeing others reactions (distancing themselves, sharing their hurt, etc.) as bullying of *them* and had therefore been kicked out of communities an abnormal number of times.
Another time, I got close to someone who was obsessed with ‘good faith’ & honesty in relationships. I thought, ‘sure, that’s a nice value.’ Down the line, learned that this person become so insulting and manipulative at the slightest indication of rejection that the only way to safely be close with them was to be abnormally withholding of any sort of sensitive information (and in some cases to outright lie).
There are more cases of this I could give however the underlying point is that I truly believe both of these people (& many others I could reference) genuinely believed they had pinpointed a ‘fault’ in mankind’s general nature that others weren’t brave enough to take issue with, when in fact they were seeing way more of the problem than the average person due to blind spots/distortions they had that were eliciting said behavior more consistently in others.
When we talk about ‘toxic’ people playing the victim, I think the thing that gets missed is that a lot of the time they’re not playing. They really are blind to how their own distortions are continuously recreating the situations they most want to avoid.
It’s a sad cycle (for everyone involved!) but way more accurate to understand it through the lens of distortions (in most cases) than assuming conscious intent.
“What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
I love this idea that we can change circumstances by speaking good or evil and at a minimum we should avoid seeing/speaking evil. We can easily do this.
I do not know what my shirt has to do with anything because I got it for free at Sukkot. I never said it was not Jonah, but again, I was the one who convinced him to do so if he did. But I was the one who got into the pool when Andy asked if I was going to swim. Jonah got into normal swimming clothes after the fact, which you can see in the picture with my other brothers.
A lot of kid expenses lie between "affordable" and "not financially responsible but still cheap enough that you feel bad saying no." This is the stress zone. It's actually less stressful when it's clearly out of range. No we won't become a horse family. For example.
