Zap strongly supports the bipartisan American Leadership in Fusion Act, introduced in Congress today by @RepZoeLofgren and @JayObernolte. If enacted, the bill would inject $10B of invaluable investment to U.S. fusion efforts, helping to ensure America remains the leader in fusion energy's commercialization as competitive efforts abroad threaten to overtake us.
This flag in Zap's production hall is a reminder that we are, and have always been, a nation of builders and innovators. Legislation like this ensures we will keep building as fast as possible toward a society powered by #fusion.
Today, Ranking Member @RepZoeLofgren and Research and Technology Subcommittee Chairman @JayObernolte introduced the American Leadership in Fusion Act!
This critical bill would accelerate the commercialization of fusion energy.⚛️

Zap President Benj Conway is at the World Nuclear Symposium in London this week, the 51st symposium and @WorldNuclear's 25th anniversary. The theme, From Ambition to Action, is a good summation of the moment: global support for advanced nuclear is no longer the hardest part, delivery is. For Zap, that means it's an ideal time to be entering this space with a rubber-meets-road focus on building multiple generations of advanced nuclear. ⚛️🌎

Congrats to Zap's new Vice President of Fission Technology, Dan Walter.
Dan joined Zap in March as Director of Nuclear Engineering. Before that, he spent nine years at TerraPower on the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment, and earlier worked at Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Idaho National Laboratory. He holds a PhD in nuclear engineering from Michigan. He'll now lead the fission organization end to end, including technical roadmap, program execution, licensing, and deployment strategy. Well earned, Dan!
"Having the validation from ARPA-E partners @Livermore_Lab, @BerkeleyLab & @unevadareno has given us confidence that we are continuing to build credibility in the scientific community."

Fun fact: 25 years after the launch of The Uranium Institute, the organization broadened its scope to include the entire civil nuclear value chain and changed its name to @WorldNuclear Association to match its mission.
Twenty-five years later, the value chain evolves again: Zap Energy is now the newest member of the WNA, and the first member company developing both fission and fusion in-house, from the ground up.
The fusion era will be built alongside fission, not after it. #nuclearenergy #fissionenergy #fusionenergy
We were pleased to host leaders from @PNNLab for discussions and a tour of our facilities last week.
PNNL has been on the leading edge of energy innovation and materials science for decades, and we’re looking forward to opportunities to collaborate and leverage their valuable expertise.
This morning we published our new website, going deeper on what an integrated nuclear company means in practice: #fission and hybrid applications built on the same industrial platform as the #fusion technology we continue to pursue, which widens the range of customers we can serve and gets clean, firm power to market sooner. Same https://t.co/14bCLIzqIL URL, much more to come.
Staff from @NRCgov visited last week as part of the agency's ongoing work to ensure next-generation nuclear energy technologies can keep advancing with right-sized rules, standards, and resources. There's no substitute for seeing the hardware in person, and these conversations help the U.S. plan for the path ahead so we can keep moving fast without cutting any corners on safety.
Our third-generation liquid bismuth loop has officially passed 1,000 hours of flowing operation: one metric ton of molten metal at 400°C, held under vacuum and running unattended for most of that time, with about 3,000 powered plasma shots into it so far. The loop also hit 5,200 hours of hot standby time waiting to host Z-pinches.
Why liquid metal? Literal tons of hot liquid metal, often under vacuum, is the key coolant across Zap's nuclear portfolio. Sodium cools fission reactors. Lithium breeds tritium, carries heat, and absorbs neutrons in fusion modules. Hybrid fission-fusion designs will likely use both metals. (Bismuth stands in for either while we prove the hardware.)
The principles of managing hot metal are consistent across bismuth, lithium, and sodium, and simple as long as you obey certain cardinal rules: the metal must be kept hotter than its melting point (271°C for bismuth) so nothing solidifies in the pipes. Absolutely nothing can leak in or out, so full penetration welds are preferred.
Last month, a local power outage handed us a surprise reliability test. When the system lost power in the middle of operations, the freeze protection valve quickly thawed, and gravity drained the liquid metal into a safe condition. No one touched anything. When the power came back on, we started the system up again without incident.
Our first lithium loop starts commissioning later this year and the first sodium loop will follow. A power plant has to operate for decades, but 1,000 hours (about 6 weeks) is a good start.

Great visit to Energy Northwest and a future location for advanced nuclear deployment adjacent to the Columbia Generating Station. Eastern Washington is rapidly emerging as one of the nation’s premier hubs for advanced nuclear energy and technology innovation, with the infrastructure, partnerships, and expertise to help shape the future of energy.
Thank you to the @EnergyNorthwest team for your hospitality, collaboration, and shared commitment to advancing the next generation of nuclear energy.
