News from the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology - Democrats. May not represent the views of Members of the Committee.
Cutting American science and research is not a good idea--it's dangerous. When we know less, we are less prepared for the next threat.
Most are in agreement; science can save lives.
So why does the president continue to risk our safety?
Great to have @Rep_McBride join me for a tour of @L3HarrisTech to learn about their cutting-edge optics work for missions like the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope.
Through this work, we are deepening our understanding of both our world and the universe beyond it.
Congratulations to the team of students at Sunset High School who are working with NASA! This group of 9th grade students designed and executed an experiment testing heat damage on electronics in microgravity as a part of the TechRise Student Challenge. It’s reassuring to see students who are so passionate about learning, and I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next! 🚀
I had the pleasure to tour the @ucsc Institute for Particle Physics yesterday, where they’re doing cutting-edge research, including in fusion energy. California institutions are leading these advancements, and it’s critical that they continue receiving federal support.
For 75 years, the National Science Foundation has helped maintain America’s leadership in innovation and technology while expanding STEM opportunities across the country.
The Trump Administration terminated all 22 members of the National Science Board, undermining the leadership that has helped guide the future of American scientific research and advancements.
I joined my @sciencedems in condemning Trump’s termination of the Nation Science Board and urge that he reinstate the board immediately.
The United States needs to be the leader in biotechnology.
As a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I introduced the bipartisan SCALE Act to help establish the gold standard for biotechnology and ensure America remains the global leader in innovation, public health, and national security.
The future won’t wait. Neither should we.
"Our country’s water infrastructure is aging and at risk on multiple fronts. If we do not act now to address those risks, widespread water insecurity for Americans could become a reality." - Ranking Member @RepZoeLofgren
"The idea that Iran, China, or Russia could shut off or poison our drinking water sounds like the plot from a blockbuster thriller, but unfortunately, it's a reality." - Environment Subcommittee Ranking Member @RepGabeAmo
Today, I led a roundtable alongside @RepVindman, Ranking Member @RepZoeLofgren, and leading scientists to discuss the future of biotechnology and the need for common standards to keep America ahead.
We are in a global race in biotechnology, and the United States needs to lead.
That’s why I’m introducing the SCALE Biology Act — legislation to create a new biometrology program at @NIST and help America set the global gold standard in biotechnology. Supporting our U.S. competitiveness, national security, and public health.
If America wants to lead the future of biotechnology, we can’t sit on the sidelines. This bill will help our country lead innovation, lead the standards, and lead the future.
Water infrastructure is at risk from sophisticated cyber threats, and EPA programs are supposed to protect them. Unfortunately, the Trump administration has fired EPA staff and defunded their work. We need federal programs to support water system cybersecurity before a breach happens.
Yesterday, I spoke on the House floor to recognize the bipartisan effort to recognize May 20th as National Women in Aerospace Day.
May 20th marks the anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s historic transatlantic flight—a moment that serves as a reminder of the women who made history, and an inspiration to the women and girls who will shape the future of aerospace.
As the Ranking Member of Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, I am proud to help lead this resolution and will continue to fight to ensure women are properly recognized for their contributions to our nation.
With wildfires already ablaze across Southern California, I passed an amendment to bring greater federal investment into wildfire research.
Wildfires are a real, present threat that require a comprehensive, advanced response. We can do that by improving our sensing and prevention measures.
Today, we are finally seeing rail safety legislation considered in Congress! This is a big first step, but it's just that - a first step. There is still more that Congress must do to ensure another disaster like what we saw in East Palestine never happens again.
From electric vehicles to advanced cybersecurity tools, we need to make sure American workers are prepared for the technologies shaping the future of transit.
I’m pushing the Federal Transit Administration to invest in workforce training, collaborate with local universities, and build a talent pipeline that makes sure our rural transit systems in Upstate New York don’t get left behind.
Today the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology advanced my bipartisan Water Power Research and Development Reauthorization Act to enhance marine energy and hydropower technologies and strengthen the electric grid. Waves, tides, and currents could power tens of millions of homes. As extreme weather worsens and electric costs surge, it’s past time we invest in affordable, clean energy to keep communities resilient. I hope this bill comes to the House floor for a vote soon.
I’m grateful that the Science committee passed my amendment to strengthen U.S. leadership in next-generation transit technologies. Fuel cell and electrified transit, safety upgrades, and modern bus fleets will reduce pollution, lower costs, and support manufacturing jobs. Passengers, transit operators, and emergency planners should have confidence that their commutes will be safe safer, cleaner, and more affordable.
