Congressman Christian D. Menefee

Proudly serving the people of TX-18 in Congress.

[Congressman Christian D. Menefee @RepCDMenefee]

I’m incredibly honored to have been sworn in yesterday to represent Texas’s 18th congressional district, and to have my wife Kaitlyn by my side.

I stand on the incredible legacy built by this district, and today I’m ready to get to work.

Republicans and Democrats across Texas agree that a border wall in Big Bend is a terrible idea. It would waste taxpayer dollars, destroy fragile ecosystems, threaten wildlife, and increase the risk of dangerous flash flooding that puts communities at risk. All for a wall that won't even solve the problem.

Breaking news: The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to allow work to continue on the border security project near Big Bend National Park in Texas.

A federal judge had halted work earlier this month. https://t.co/afXymz9yno

Trump’s war in Iran is driving up prices at the gas pump, and hardworking families are feeling it. Months into this war, Americans are still waiting for a clear plan to bring it to an end. Democrats have repeatedly voted to stop the fighting, but Republicans have refused to support those efforts.

Had a great time visiting CoolxDad at E.W. Cullen Middle School! Through their CoolxKids Community Enrichment Hub, they’re empowering fathers, supporting our young people, and building stronger Houston families.

When we invest in our kids and the men helping raise them, we’re investing in Houston’s future.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I’m proud to support legislation that strengthens protections for survivors, expands access to emergency shelters, and invests in preventing abuse before it happens.

Domestic violence has taken the lives of 160 Texans in the last year, leaving 223 children without one or both parents. Harris County had the highest number of intimate partner homicides in the state.

These numbers are heartbreaking, and we have work to do.

My understanding is the FBI, Capitol Police and Postal Inspection Service are investigating.

Senator Cruz and I work in the same building, so my team is on high alert. Our staff has reviewed the mail screening protocol, and anyone who sees something suspicious knows to report it to law enforcement right away. I appreciate the people who screen our mail every day, and I trust that whoever is sending these will be found.

Prices keep rising, families are struggling, and Trump and Republicans act like everything is fine. They promised lower costs. Americans are fed up and don't deserve this nonsense.

What a day for Houston!

Congratulations to @breadoflifehtx on the Knowles-Rowland House and their continued investment in our unhoused neighbors. Funds from the Biden administration helped make this happen, proof that our federal government should be investing in local organizations.

I'm in awe of Pastors @DrRudyRasmus and @Pastor_Juanita. Their decades of service built a legacy Houston will carry for generations!

And, of course, Houston is forever grateful that @Beyonce, @kellyrowland, and Ms. Tina Knowles keep pouring back into our city.

[House Judiciary Dems @HouseJudiciary]

Just 22 days before the midterm Congressional elections, federal agents shockingly searched the D.C. home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a sitting Democratic Member of Congress from Minnesota. According to public reporting, DHS’s laughable excuse for this assault on our constitutional values was that they were looking for fraud in immigration paperwork that Rep. Omar’s late father filled out several decades ago, when Rep. Omar was a child and the family came to America as refugees fleeing the civil war in Somalia.

Rep. Omar has been a naturalized American citizen for decades, and her constituents have overwhelmingly elected her to Congress four times. She has now been made the target of a classic Trump political harassment and frame-up operation during the last three weeks of a Congressional election in which President Trump describes himself as being ‘on the ballot.’

Federal agents appear to have searched a sitting congresswoman’s home not to investigate any real crime or threat, but to carry out a campaign of political retribution against one of President Trump’s most outspoken critics. This kind of presidential harassment and persecution of a political critic is exactly why the Framers wrote the Speech or Debate Clause and the First Amendment—to protect Members of Congress and citizens against petty and vindictive reprisal by the Executive branch.

DOJ violated its own policy, which requires the Department to abstain from overt actions in politically-sensitive matters in the 60 days before an election, to conduct this search. This is no accident. Just 22 days before the elections, this is blatant political intimidation and an attempt to interfere with the Congresswoman’s reelection. It is also the culmination of a smear campaign against Minnesota’s Somali American community.

Rep. Omar now joins the ranks of multiple Democratic Members of Congress who have been targeted by Trump’s vindictive Administration on the most outlandish trumped-up charges, including Rep. Maggie Goodlander, Rep. Jason Crow, Rep. Chris Deluzio, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, Rep. LaMonica McIver, Senator Adam Schiff, Senator Elissa Slotkin, and Senator Mark Kelly. This DOJ routinely harasses Trump’s perceived enemies, including former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and my constituent Davey Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist framed on utterly bogus charges for turning our Reflecting Pool into an algae farm, which was actually the handiwork of Trump’s $15 million no-bid pool contractor. In none of these cases has the Administration succeeded in doing anything other than wasting taxpayer resources and forcing citizens to waste their own precious time and money defending themselves against bogus charges.

House Judiciary Committee Democrats stand with Rep. Omar against this outrageous abuse of power, and we will be demanding transparency and accountability as to who authorized this abusive search and who carried it out.

[Rep. Ilhan Omar @Ilhan]

The Office of Congresswoman Omar released the following statement:

“This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies. For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric, repeatedly putting a target on her back. Now, those attacks have escalated to a pointless federal raid. The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies.”

[Congressman Christian D. Menefee @RepCDMenefee]

A vile abuse of power.

Trump has attacked @Ilhan for years. Now he's using the federal government against a sitting member of Congress three weeks before an election.

No president should weaponize the government against political enemies.

This president has done so time and again, and the Republicans who control Congress just sit back and let it happen.

I stand with Ilhan.

Proud to join Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan and Tax Assessor-Collector Carmen Turner for the 6th Annual Walter Moses Burton Breakfast.

We honored Walter Moses Burton, Fort Bend County’s first Black sheriff and tax collector, who also served in the Texas Senate.

His legacy reminds us why representation matters at every level of government. We must honor those who paved the way and keep opening doors for future generations.

A live-streamed execution is sick.

Trump took the party of “movies and video games are too violent for our kids” and turned it into the party of “we’re bringing an execution straight to your screens.”

He and Pete Hegseth continue to disgrace their offices.

Whatever you think of the death penalty, it shouldn’t be a public spectacle.

[The Washington Post @washingtonpost]

Breaking news: The firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be live-streamed, the Defense Department said.

“People need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said. https://t.co/lu12xDKi3E
