It was hard. I will be honest. Really hard. But I chose to see it from a different perspective. African fathers are a different breed. They are notoriously poor at expressing love and would sooner stomp, shout and curse when all they want to say is, “Be careful.”

Then I considered the circumstances in which my father himself was raised. He, too, was a product of his generation, carrying wounds I will probably never fully understand. So, after everything that passed between us, I found myself looking at him a little more kindly. That is not to say it was easy. It wasn’t. Some of the things that were said are difficult to let go of. Really difficult. There are days I remember them and, for a fleeting moment, feel quite frankly inadequate.

It is why I laugh when strangers on the internet attempt to troll me. My own father has said worse. Who the hell do you think you are that your words should matter? But then, he is my father, and this is his first time being one. I have learned, difficult as it has been, to cut him some slack.

For anyone looking for a low stakes way to do this, come together with some of your friends, have a once a month thing where 2 speakers pick a random topic to present on. Rotate the speakers every month. Have room for discussion. The good thing is, this can be done remotely too.
