Sometimes, we become so concerned about what is missing from our lives that we forget how much Allah has already given us. We look at those who have more and feel unfortunate, forgetting that millions of people are praying for some of the things we presently take for granted.

You woke up today; someone did not. You ate; someone is hungry. You have a home; someone has nowhere safe to sleep. You complain about work; someone desperately needs a job. You worry about your children; someone is praying for a child. You complain about responsibilities; someone wishes they still had the people whose responsibilities once occupied their lives.

Gratitude does not mean that life is perfect or that our difficulties are insignificant. We may have debts, illnesses, disappointments, family problems and unanswered prayers. But our challenges should never make us blind to our blessings.

Look again at your life. The ability to breathe, walk, think, worship, love, work, eat, sleep and hope are enormous favours. Even the opportunity to see another day, repent from yesterday and try again is a mercy beyond measure.

Allah says: “If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more.” (Qurʾān 14:7)

Strive for a better tomorrow, but never despise today's blessings. Perhaps we are not as unfortunate as we sometimes imagine. Perhaps we simply need to look again, and say from the depth of our hearts:

Alḥamdulillāhi Rabbil-ʿĀlamīn.
