What exactly is the problem with hijab?
Start from the basics: What is the purpose of a school uniform? Identification; nothing more. It has nothing to do with learning.
Berets (French origin), pinafores (British origin), ties, coats, none of these affect education. And in many countries like Finland, Sweden, et al., students don’t even wear uniforms. They wear their normal clothes, including hijab, without it being an issue.
The Nigerian constitution permits hijab. The school in question is a public school, built with taxpayers’ money, open to all citizens. So the suggestion that “they should go to another school” is invalid. Public schools belong to everyone, and everyone has equal rights.
In 2026, when schools should be focusing on curriculum improvement, modern pedagogy, and the decolonisation of Nigeria’s primary and secondary education, the energy is being wasted on hijab, something that has zero impact on learning.
If the school allows ties, coats, berets, and pinafores, then why is a small hijab suddenly a problem? The only reasonable discussion should be ensuring the hijab matches the school colours.
The management’s focus should be on organizing seminars for teachers on modern pedagogy, classroom relevance, and improving educational quality. A responsible school management and any teacher who values positive impact should know that hijab is the least of their worries.
There are far more important things to learn in basic school pedagogy than hijab.
Oh teacher, oh school management: look beyond the hijab. Think of quality education.
