Students across the country are rising up against a new military law that allows active-duty officers to take civilian posts. From Yogyakarta to Malang, protests have turned violent. Police used tear gas, water cannons, and brutal force. In response, protesters in Malang set part of the DPRD building on fire. In Yogyakarta, student leader Tiyo Ardianto now faces open intimidation after leading a protest last week. Blood-red banners appeared near the demonstration site, accusing him and other activists of being foreign pawns.
