@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant So we agree that government policy played a significant role in all four cases. My point was about applying the same standard of responsibility. 😊 Now let’s move on to colonialism and slavery. Shall we start with King Leopold II ?
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant So your argument is that once a blight or a war starts, government policy suddenly becomes irrelevant? The British government made no decisions during those famines? That’s an interesting standard ahah
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant You keep applying two different standards 🤣
For the Soviet and Chinese famines, government policy is enough to blame the entire economic system. But for the Irland and Indian famines under British rule, suddenly it’s droughts, monsoons, and every other possible explanation 🎻
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant Nice goalpost shift ahah I never disputed that government policies played a central role. I questioned your claim that those famines were completely optional in every capacity. Those aren’t the same statement. So, do you have evidence that that is the historical consensus?
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant And I’m not asking for one historian or one book. I’m asking for evidence that this is the historical consensus. If you’re right, it should be easy
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant Thanks for proving my point 😊 You’re willing to reduce every famine under capitalism to droughts, monsoons, and it wasn’t intentional, yet you refuse to apply the same standard to the Soviet and Chinese famines. Gotta love the double standard ahahah
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant Like under the British rule, the famines in India are estimated by many historians to have killed around 30 million people across the 18th to 20th centuries. What do you think about it ?
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant By that logic, you could also say the Soviet and Chinese famines were caused by poor harvests and bad weather, and that they were merely handled badly ☺️ and if you want to talk about historical facts and death tolls, I can give you just as many examples under capitalism
@SWoeten@Holygon1@somethings_awry@jadedconsultant If you’re going to criticize socialism because of famines, then you should also acknowledge the famines that happened under capitalist economies and colonial rule, like the Bengal Famine of 1943 and the Great Irish Famine. Famines aren’t exclusive to socialism lol
@Artertard @Monkey777T59176 @Magic_Marine27@TjkWAkram @JingoVj1 Sure, showing up near the end when Russia had already taken Stalingrad and the victory was basically secured was really impressive. The only useful thing you did was provide weapons.
