In Baniyas, a Love Lost to Brutality By Jenan Moussa Karam Dawa, a Syrian dentist working in Basra, Iraq, was preparing for one of the happiest moments of his life—his engagement to Nour Issa Nezha, a 23-year-old pharmacist from Baniyas, Syria. Instead, he is now grieving her brutal murder, along with that of her family, in an unprovoked massacre. Last Friday, armed militants stormed Nour’s family home in al-Qusoor neighborhood of Baniyas, killing everyone inside. Nour, her sister Hazar, who was also a pharmacist, their brother Ibrahim, a doctor, and their mother, Waheeba, were all executed in cold blood. Hazar’s husband, Ali, was gravely injured and remains in intensive care. Their father, Issa, was the sole survivor—not by design, but by pure chance. He had traveled earlier to their ancestral village. All family members are Syrian Alawites. Karam spoke with heartbreak about the woman he loved. "We were in love for five years. We were supposed to get engaged in a couple of months." But fate had other plans. Instead of celebrating a new chapter together, he is left with nothing but grief and unanswered questions. "To her killer, I would say: I wish you killed me instead. If you only knew what a kind and innocent person she was." No reason was given for the killings. The family never stepped outside, they were inside their apartment when the killers suddenly stormed in. The family wasn’t involved in politics or conflict. They were simply civilians, caught in the ruthless wave of sectarian violence that continues to tear Syria apart. “I was informed of the killings by a cousin of Nour,” says Karam, who feels helpless being far away in Basra. “The gunmen just killed everybody in the house while Ali was seriously injured.” The attack was swift and merciless. The militants stormed the apartment, slaughtering the family without hesitation. “We also heard terrible stories of what they did to other neighbors,” says Karam, “But I don’t know who exactly was killed and who not. Information is all still very fresh and chaotic.” The tragedy deepens with the story of Hazar, Nour’s sister, who had just been married in November of last year. Now, she is dead, her husband Ali barely clinging to life in a hospital bed. Her last post on Facebook, an eerie and heartbreaking plea, simply read: "God, please have mercy on us." Karam is struggling to make sense of his loss. The life he had envisioned with Nour has been destroyed in an instant. His heart is shattered, his dreams stolen. "Why did you leave me alone?" he asks, but there is no answer.
