@Channel4News and @alextomo did a short film in 2017 about the failure of Tulip Siddiq MP, who is Sheikh Hasina's niece, and who used to work for the Awami League, to take any steps to help Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem, a UK trained barrister, who was then one year into his secret detention/disappearance. Tulip, as a UK MP and the prime minister's niece, had unusual access to pressure her Aunt. He continued to spend 7 further years in a secret jail until he was released today, the day after Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as prime-minister and left the country.

This is the first proper and serious statement from the international community (other than those from UN human rights bodies) commensurate with the seriousness of the violations of human rights committed by the Bangladesh government over recent days, given by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

"In the margins of the ASEAN Regional Forum Ministerial Meeting in Laos on 27 July, I conveyed to the representative of Bangladesh and former Foreign Minister, Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, MP, my grave concern at the announcement of a “shoot on sight policy” and unlawful killings perpetrated in recent days by the authorities in Bangladesh. I am also deeply concerned by the killings of law enforcement officers, violence, torture, mass arrests and damage to property that have taken place. These acts must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible brought to justice. There must be full accountability for the numerous instances of use of excessive and lethal force by the law enforcement authorities against protesters and others, including journalists and young children. The thousands arrested must receive due process.We will follow closely the actions of the authorities in the context of this crisis and, with the fundamentals of EU-Bangladesh relations in mind, expect all human rights to be fully respected."

I dont know what will be the implications of this #Bangladesh student leader's declaration, but from a human rights perspective the bits that jumped out for me were:
- his claim that "fellow coordinators" of the student protest were kept "hostage in the Detective Branch office" and told "to call off the movement -- at gunpoint."
- his claim that families of those killed by law enforcement authorities and student wing of teh Awami League "are being brought to Dhaka by the armed forces and coerced to give false statements putting all the blame on the agitators."
When will the country's Awami League government stop all this!
