The government currently has no foreign currency in its reserves. The country still needs to pay about another USD 50 million for its regular bilateral payments. The government has compelled the Bank of Maldives (BML) to use its customers’ deposits to meet debt repayments, and as a result, the bank is unable to honour withdrawals. BML hopes to resume honouring customer transactions next week, assuming the government succeeds in collecting USD 160 million from the mandatory 40 percent of resort revenue that must be converted into rufiyaa. However, this is not a financial strategy but rather wishful thinking. International audit firms operating in the Maldives must release accurate figures for BML, as it is a public bank.
