Months ago, my wife wanted to surprise me for my next birthday by gifting me a ticket to Halo Fest, including the flight, hotel and so on. I was even surprised that she had heard about the event, but I guess that’s what love means.

She could have made it a surprise, but she wanted to make sure that I actually wanted to go.

I told her she was perfect. That this could have been the most amazing gift I could dream of… But I declined.
Mainly because, honestly, I don’t really care much anymore. Glad I did.

Studio "leadership and culture" is just as important as "ideas", especially as a studio grows past 30 people.

If you have poor leadership, all the "good ideas" in the world won't matter. Some people are great "idea people" and some people are great "leaders" (and some are both!)

Marty was obviously a great composer.. but he was also necessary to the OG Bungie culture. The studio culture started going to shit around the time Marty was fired. It wasn't ONLY b/c Marty left, but he was a necessary component.

Say what you will about Halo Studios/343 and their tenure with the franchise, but if there's a major thing I'm thankful for what they did, it was providing the MCC mod tools for Halos 1-4. My technical knowledge of Halo wouldn't be where it is now without that initiative.

Here's my free advice to Activision on how to proceed with Halo:

Step 1: Contact and request an audience with the following original Halo/Bungie devs: Jaime Griesemer, Chris Barrett, Marty O'Donnell, and Marcus Lehto.

The goal of the conversations should be to answer the following questions: "How and why did the 343 Halo games not live up to the Bungie Halo games? How can future Halo games do better in this regard?"

Have those discussions. See if you can find a common understanding. Beyond that, the franchise is Activision's to find success or failure. But perform this necessary due diligence immediately.

Let me use a hypothetical to help make the point:
Let's say that I was given the game director role on the next Half-Life game. And then I was asked, "Hey, would you like to meet and chat with some of the original devs from Half-Life1/2? They would be happy to share their knowledge." My answer would be "Yes, of course. Only a fucking idiot would choose NOT to talk w the original devs."

It would seem that 343/Halo Studios didn't see this as an important part of the process.. and we all know how that ended.

I hope Activision doesn't make the same mistake.

Shocked but not entirely surprised by the news of the Halo Studios closure and moving the franchise to an Activision team.

Wishing the best for all the devs who were affected by this decision.

- Any huge modes planned for it

Activision will be taking over with a new studio that decides what stays, and what goes with a new Halo title.
