Today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru @TVKVijayHQ announced in the assembly that the TN Government has decided to cancel the Parandur Airport Project. TN CM mentioned that certain sites are under consideration, but it would have been helpful if he had also proposed a new site for the second airport near Chennai, as the delay in identifying its location has set the state's development back by at least 10 years.

This announcement of the cancellation of the new airport project carries an opportunity cost that the State Government needs to consider carefully. Even if the TN Government chooses to move forward with a second airport instead of Parandur through an administrative decision soon, finding a site, taking approval from the Central Government and statutory bodies, issuing tenders, acquiring land, and securing licenses could take at least ten years before the airport becomes operational. Meanwhile, other States would be advancing, leaving us behind.

We should first accept that the current airport in Chennai is insufficient even by today's standards. Chennai’s airport spans a 1300-acre land parcel; Hyderabad's airport spans approximately 5,500 acres; Bengaluru's spans 4000 acres; Navi Mumbai's is built on 2866 acres; and Delhi airport spans 5100 acres. With such a small space, the current airport in Chennai should ideally offer a better customer experience, but taking local transport from the arrivals area is a nightmare today.

Chennai was once the gateway of South India. Today, Chennai airport ranks 5th in total passenger-handling capacity, with a capacity of 30 million passengers per year. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are above Chennai on this table. The present Chennai airport is not classified as a Code F airport due to inadequate taxiways and aerobridges, which make landing large aircraft such as the A380 unsuitable at Chennai. In the South, the Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports can handle large aircraft.

Considering the above, I request the TN Govt to accelerate the process of identifying a suitable location for the 2nd airport in Chennai at the earliest, as delays in site identification could push us well beyond 10 years. Parties may come and go. Governments will change. But 20 years later, when the people of Tamil Nadu look back, they should not feel suffocated by a sick building that we would still call an airport, because the administrators of the day lacked the ability to forecast.

Also, in March this year, news reports stated that the TN Govt had acquired 1,700 acres for the Parandur airport project, out of the 5,746 acres needed. What does the State govt now intend to do with this acquired land?

ஆனால், புதிய இடம் எது என்பதையும் முதலமைச்சர் அறிவித்திருந்தால் சிறப்பாக இருந்திருக்கும். ஏனெனில், இரண்டாவது விமான நிலையத்திற்கான இடத்தைத் தேர்வு செய்யத் தாமதப்படுத்துவதால், தமிழ்நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சி குறைந்தது 10 ஆண்டுகள் தாமதிக்கும் அபாயம் உள்ளது.

பரந்தூர் திட்டத்திற்கு மாற்றாக வேறு இடத்தில் இரண்டாவது விமான நிலையத்தை அமைக்க தமிழக அரசு நிர்வாக ரீதியாக முடிவெடுத்தாலும், புதிய இடத்தைத் தேர்வு செய்வது, மத்திய அரசு மற்றும் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட சட்டப்பூர்வமான அனுமதிகளைப் பெறுவது, ஒப்பந்தப்புள்ளிகள் கோருவது, நிலம் கையகப்படுத்துவது, தேவையான உரிமங்கள் பெறுவது என, விமான நிலையம் செயல்பாட்டுக்கு வர குறைந்தது 10 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகலாம். அதற்குள் மற்ற மாநிலங்கள் வேகமாக முன்னேறிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் நிலையில், தமிழ்நாடு பின்னுக்குத் தள்ளப்படும்.

இன்றைய தேவைக்கே சென்னை விமான நிலையம் போதுமானதாக இல்லை என்பதை முதலில் நாம் ஒப்புக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தின் பரப்பளவு சுமார் 1,300 ஏக்கர். ஆனால், ஹைதராபாத் விமான நிலையம் சுமார் 5,500 ஏக்கர், பெங்களூரு விமான நிலையம் 4,000 ஏக்கர், நவி மும்பை விமான நிலையம் 2,866 ஏக்கர், டெல்லி விமான நிலையம் 5,100 ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில் அமைந்துள்ளன.

இவ்வளவு குறைந்த பரப்பளவில் இயங்கும் சென்னை விமான நிலையம், குறைந்தபட்சம் பயணிகளுக்கு சிறந்த சேவையை வழங்க வேண்டும். ஆனால், விமான நிலையத்தில் தரையிறங்கும் பகுதியில் இருந்து வெளியே வந்து, உள்ளூர் போக்குவரத்தை அடைவதற்கே பயணிகள் இன்று பெரும் சிரமத்தை எதிர்கொள்கிறார்கள்.

ஒரு காலத்தில் தென்னிந்தியாவின் நுழைவாயிலாக இருந்த சென்னை, இன்று விமானப் பயணிகள் கையாளும் திறனில் 5-வது இடத்தில் உள்ளது. ஆண்டுக்கு சுமார் 3 கோடி பயணிகளை கையாளும் திறன் கொண்ட சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தை விட டெல்லி, மும்பை, பெங்களூரு, ஹைதராபாத் விமான நிலையங்கள் முன்னிலையில் உள்ளன.

மேலும், சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தில் போதுமான டாக்ஸிவேக்கள் மற்றும் ஏர்பிரிட்ஜ்கள் இல்லாத காரணத்தால், பெரிய விமானங்களைக் கையாளும் திறன் கொண்ட Code F விமான நிலையமாக சென்னை விமான நிலையம் வகைப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை. இதனால் A380 போன்ற மிகப்பெரிய விமானங்கள் தரையிறங்க, சென்னை விமான நிலையம் ஏற்றதாக இல்லை. தென்னிந்தியாவில் பெங்களூரு மற்றும் ஹைதராபாத் விமான நிலையங்கள் பெரிய விமானங்களை கையாளும் Code F விமான நிலையங்களாக உள்ளன என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

கட்சிகள் வரலாம், போகலாம். ஆட்சிகள் மாறலாம். ஆனால் இன்னும் 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு தமிழ்நாட்டு மக்கள் திரும்பிப் பார்க்கும்போது, தொலைநோக்குப் பார்வையற்ற நிர்வாகத்தின் காரணமாக, ஒரு தரமற்ற கட்டிடத்தை விமான நிலையம் என்று அழைக்கும் நிலையில் சிக்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்று வருந்தக்கூடாது. எனவே, தமிழ்நாடு அரசு இனியும் தாமதிக்காமல், சென்னையின் இரண்டாவது விமான நிலையத்திற்கான பொருத்தமான இடத்தை உடனடியாகத் தேர்வு செய்து, விமான நிலையம் அமைக்கும் திட்டத்தை விரைவுபடுத்த வேண்டும்.

மேலும், இந்த ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாதத்தில் வெளியான செய்திகளின்படி, பரந்தூர் விமான நிலையத்திற்குத் தேவையான 5,746 ஏக்கரில் சுமார் 1,700 ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை தமிழ்நாடு அரசு ஏற்கனவே கையகப்படுத்தியிருந்ததாகத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. பரந்தூர் திட்டம் தற்போது கைவிடப்பட்டுள்ள நிலையில், அந்த 1,700 ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை தமிழ்நாடு அரசு இனி என்ன செய்யப் போகிறது? இதற்கான தெளிவான பதிலையும் தவெக அரசு, மக்களுக்கு தெரிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று முதலமைச்சர் திரு @TVKVijayHQ அவர்களைக் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்.

Onam…

This generation thinks wearing a Kerala saree and dancing is Onam. After that, eat an Onam sadhya, take some selfies in front of the pookkalam, and that's it.

You accept it or not, the fault lies with us Hindus.

We Hindus have slowly stopped celebrating our festivals. Yes, I agree, it is a hell of a lot of work. But at least once a year, we should come out of our comfort zone and show our kids, “This is how we celebrate.” That’s how those kids will carry the tradition forward to their children.

But what do we do?

To be frank, Malayalis outside Kerala celebrate Onam better than people inside Kerala.

In the Gulf countries, Malayali Samajams organise traditional Onam celebrations. People settled in America and North India also seem to celebrate Onam more traditionally than many people in Kerala.

Last year, I went to Kerala actually, the day after Onam. I went to my relatives' house and eagerly went straight to the kitchen.

I thought, as usual, the day after Onam, there would be plenty of leftovers .. avial, kurukku kalan, payasam, puli inji, erissery, and so on.

They told me, “Hey, nothing is left, pa. We finished everything yesterday itself.”

I said, “That's impossible! No matter how little we plan to cook, there will always be leftovers, especially payasam!”

You know what they said?

“Yesterday, we ordered only a little.”

1 litre of payasam.
500 g of aval.
100 g of puli inji.
And 1 litre of sambar from a caterer.

“What did you cook?” I asked.

They said, “We fried some pappad and cooked rice.”

This is Onam now in Kerala.🙄
People just want a oneday holiday to relax and enjoy. They don't want to cook. They don't want to spend time decorating the pookkalam.

They want a few sadhya pictures, so they order them.
Even readymade pookkalams are now available in Kerala markets. (I’ll attach the picture in the comments.)

Kids see all this and think, this is Onam.
Dress up..Dance,eat, take some pictures, post them on Instagram ...and Onam is over.🙄

There was a time when Kerala celebrated Onam for ten days, from Atham to Thiruvonam.

Preparations would begin days in advance.

One day for frying nendra banana chips.
One day for making jackfruit chips.
One day for preparing puli inji.
For ten days, we would make pookkalams.

Atham day 1 we clean our home

Chitra ..chodhi nakshatra days for shopping..(ona kodi)

Thriketta, Moolam, Pooradam…we make
Onathappan, representing Mahabali and associated with the Onam tradition, would be crafted and placed near the pookkalam. (Will attach pic in comment section)
That was a tradition.

Now everyone is busy. No time for cooking. No time for making pookkalam. 🙄🙄

But somehow, we have plenty of time for dancing. 😐

And then we wonder why the next generation doesn't know how our festivals were traditionally celebrated.
