It guarantees that they are provided with adequate notice of the charges against them, an opportunity to be heard in a hearing, etc. None of which apply to a clump of cells.

Children are easily rehabilitated due to their age. Holding them to the same moral / legal standards as adults is psychologically flawed. This is why age is a factor in sentencing. Welcome to the real world!
