The biggest tragedy of Trump's presidency is how the world has become a less safe place, given how he has emboldened dictators across the globe and how his senseless war has driven up global inflation.

Beyond that, his presidency has weakened American credibility on the world stage, leaving allies uncertain of Washington's commitments and adversaries testing the limits of that uncertainty.

Trade wars launched on impulse have disrupted supply chains and strained relationships with longstanding partners. Domestic institutions, from the courts to the press, have faced sustained pressure that has left them weaker and more polarised.

Climate diplomacy has stalled, at a moment when coordinated global action was most urgently needed. Perhaps most troubling, the erosion of democratic norms at home has offered a template that authoritarian leaders elsewhere have been quick to copy.
