⚠️If you still believe sports and politics have nothing to do with each other, this is for you.
For years, millions of Iranians have rejected the so called national team that the Islamic Republic sends to international tournaments, a team many believe represents loyalty to the regime rather than the people.
Now look at this.
The man in the photo below is Mehran Samak. He was celebrating with his family after the defeat of a team he no longer considered his own. Moments after this video was recorded, he was shot in the head by an Islamic Republic security officer and killed.
His “crime”?
Honking his car horn and celebrating the loss of a team that had once been his childhood dream, but had become a symbol of betrayal in the eyes of countless Iranians.
So the next time someone tells you sports and politics are separate in Iran, remember Mehran Samak. He paid for that “football opinion” with his life.
Every time Iranians got screwed over by history, France somehow had a front row seat. At this point, I genuinely wonder what their problem is with Iranians.
