Day 2 at #UNGA81

The 81st UN General Assembly opened its General Debate in New York, with world leaders reinforcing the role of the United Nations and calling for renewed efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Ending AIDS, as part of SDG 3.3, is one of the areas where the world has made significant progress — demonstrating what sustained political commitment and multilateral action can achieve.

Against that backdrop, UNAIDS brought the lessons of the HIV response into today’s conversations at #UNGA81.

At OAFLAD: A Legacy of Leadership – Delivering for Women and Girls, @Winnie_Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, reflected on UNAIDS’ founding role and longstanding partnership with the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (@OAFLAD) and the lessons from the HIV response that remain crucial to protecting women and girls.

Monica Geingos, former First Lady of Namibia @FirstLadyNam3, also recognised UNAIDS’ steadfast support and partnership for the initiative.

Meanwhile, @AchrekarAngeli, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS, joined the CGI:2026 Annual Meeting Health Working Session, sharing UNAIDS’ insights on how lessons from the HIV response can inform the future of global health.

Across today’s engagements, UNAIDS connected the progress made on HIV with the wider work of strengthening health systems, protecting rights and ensuring multilateral cooperation delivers for people.

During her country visit, @anneshongwe and @ZhouKai_2000 met with @FirstLadyNam3 Ms. Monica Geingos and visited the #BeFree Youth Campus.

Last year saw the sharpest drop of global aid, including to HIV programmes.
As a consequence, HIV testing fell by 22% in high-burden settings, which means people do not know their HIV status and do not receive treatment.
Fully funding the HIV response is critical to end AIDS.
