Ten days have passed since the Houthis closed the road leading to Taiz, Yemen. As the siege continues, its consequences are extending far beyond transportation and rising prices. It is now threatening access to water, fuel, healthcare, and other essential services that people depend on every day.
Today, I want to highlight two critical consequences of this siege that may not receive enough attention, but directly affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
First: The water crisis.
Taiz has suffered from a severe water shortage for years. Wadi Al-Dhabab has been one of the city's main water sources, with wells supplying residents through water tankers.
Now, the wells in Wadi Al-Dhabab are under Houthi control, raising serious concerns about the city's access to water and threatening to deepen an already critical humanitarian crisis.
Just five days ago, the price of a water tanker rose from 20,000 to 80,000 Yemeni rials because of rising diesel prices. Following the latest developments, there are fears that prices could rise even further, placing an unbearable burden on families already struggling to survive.
This is just one consequence of the siege of Taiz.
Second: The waste crisis and environmental dangers.
The Al-Saleh Gardens area, which was used as a dumping site for the city's garbage, has also come under Houthi control. With waste disposal disrupted, garbage is piling up in the streets, creating growing environmental and public health risks for residents.
Hospitals are facing additional challenges. With no reliable public electricity supply, many medical facilities depend on diesel-powered generators to keep their services running. Any disruption to fuel supplies could threaten the continuity of medical care and put patients' lives at risk.
Commercial electricity generators are also at risk of shutting down, potentially leaving large parts of the city in darkness at night and adding another burden to the daily suffering of residents.
These are just some of the consequences of the siege. There are many more that people in Taiz are experiencing every day.
But amid all this suffering, there is something that deserves the world's attention: the determination of the people of Taiz to remain steadfast.
When you ask an ordinary resident how the siege has affected them, you may hear a simple answer: "Prices have gone up, and life has become difficult, but we will stand firm."
Imagine hearing those words from people facing soaring prices, fuel shortages, and growing difficulties in accessing water and medicine.
When you tell them how much harder life has become, some respond with determination: "Do the Houthis think they can force us to surrender through a siege? We will not bow. We are prepared to endure anything, even if we have to eat dirt."
These are the words of ordinary people I have encountered, and they have deeply affected me personally.
To see someone struggling every day to provide for their family, facing such difficult circumstances, yet refusing to give up, is a powerful reminder of the determination that still exists in this city.
Our hope, first and foremost, rests with God, and then with these people, the resilience of the community, and the soldiers defending the city.
There is no denying the severity of the situation. The humanitarian and economic suffering caused by the siege is real, and its consequences must not be underestimated.
Yet what we see on the ground tells another important part of the story. Many people in Taiz remain determined, and the fear and rumors circulating on social media do not necessarily reflect the reality of the people or their resolve.
The people of Taiz are suffering, but they remain deeply attached to their city. They refuse to allow the siege to become a tool for imposing the Houthis' will or achieving their political and military objectives.
