There is misinformation circulating on social media claiming that the Waqf Board can take ownership of any land in India. On November 8, 2024, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya falsely claimed that the Waqf Board took over a farmer’s land, leading to his suicide. The police later filed an FIR against him, and he apologized for sharing incorrect information. CNN-News18's Rahul Shivshankar also spread false claims about the Waqf Board declaring any property as Waqf. According to the Waqf Act, 1995, the Board can only claim properties donated by Muslims for religious purposes, not private or non-Muslim properties. The BJP government’s proposed amendments have raised concerns among scholars about weakening Waqf protections.
