In the classical theory, you own something (you have dominion) if you can do with it as you please, including altering it and selling it. This right is recognized, not generated, by the law. And law was not set by "popular consent" anywhere until the 19th century, which is when modern socialism got its start.
@ErasmusBHarry@PhilWMagness Socialism, as opposed to liberalism and conservatism, was a broad ideological current centered around popular/social direction of the economy towards defined ends. You're a socialist if you believe the rights of property derive from popular consent.
There's actually a productive line of questioning here: People (at least those with conservative temperaments) understand societal well-being through local lenses—what's best for me., my family, my town, my region, my country. And that questions is parsed through the language, customs, commonly understood standards of behavior, order, beauty, specific to our time and place.
