zkDrive’s threat model is built around the real risks of cloud storage.
An honest-but-curious server should not be able to read your files.
A compromised database should not expose usable data.
That’s why zkDrive keeps protection client-side:
Client-side AES-GCM-256 encryption.
Encrypted file metadata.
Keys derived locally and never transmitted.
ZK commitments reveal nothing about file contents.
Even with server or database access, attackers only see ciphertext.
Your device and wallet security still matter - but zkDrive makes sure the storage layer never becomes the weak point.
Metadata encryption is now part of zkDrive’s cryptographic layer.
File names and MIME types are encrypted separately from the file body using the same file key, but with a distinct IV.
That means the server stores encrypted metadata instead of readable file details.
File body: encrypted.
File metadata: encrypted.
Folder names: kept plaintext for directory listings.
Private by design, practical where needed.

The main foundations are already up and running the core drive app, wallet key authentication, browser based encryption, ZK ownership proofs, and direct file sharing. On top of that, we just officially went live with Token-Gated Storage Tiers. Now, the system directly checks your wallet balance on chain when you sign in, unlocking higher tier storage limits if you hold the required threshold of our native token.
Instead of slowing down, we are moving straight into the next technical milestone today: chunked and resumable uploads. We're making it so you can stream massive files in encrypted pieces, meaning if your connection drops mid upload, it picks up right where it left off instead of forcing a full restart.
Once this chunking layer is built out, we're knocking down the rest of our immediate roadmap items one by one
Expiring & Protected Links:- Giving you the ability to set strict timers on share links or lock them down with pass phrases without weakening the encryption.
Installable PWA:- Building a dedicated, mobile friendly app that handles offline aware uploads right from your phone.
Bulk Operations:- Cleaning up the file management layer so you can batch select, move or wipe entire folders at once.
There’s still a lot of work to do to make this the ultimate web3 storage layer.

Encrypted at rest is a massive trap in traditional cloud storage.
When a standard provider says your files are secure, what they actually mean is: We lock your front door, but we keep a master key under our mat to let ourselves in whenever we want.
zkDrive completely flips this. Instead of trusting a server, everything happens right inside your own browser through two distinct layers with a massive emphasis on how you actually log in.
Most people don't realize that standard encryption doesn't matter if the login process itself is flawed. That's why we focus equally on locking the data and masking the user:
1. ZK Authentication (The Gatekeeper): Instead of typing a password or sending a hash to a server, your browser generates a Zero Knowledge proof. You instantly prove to the network that you are the rightful owner of the vault, but you do it without ever revealing your private keys, wallet seed, or credentials. The server stays completely blind to who you are.
2. Local Encryption (The Safe): Your files are fully encrypted and sealed directly on your machine before they ever touch the internet.
By the time your data hits the network, it’s completely unreadable, and your identity is totally cloaked. We don't just promise not to look at your files or track your account we physically, mathematically made it impossible for us to ever do so.

zkDrive derives access from your Solana wallet instead of traditional credentials.
A deterministic SIWS-style wallet signature is processed through HKDF-SHA256 to generate a 256-bit vault key that exists only in browser memory - never transmitted, never stored server-side.
That means:
no account creation
no credential database
no password reset surface
no secret exposed to the server
Same wallet + same derivation flow = the same vault key.

We’ve been closely monitoring user feedback since the launch of zkDrive.
A small number of users experienced friction with our native wallet authentication, making onboarding less seamless than we want it to be.
To solve this, we’re replacing the current authentication flow with Privy, delivering a much smoother login experience while maintaining the same security standards behind zkDrive.
