That ghost has been ruining surgeries since electric lighting arrived. Surgeons in white got blinded by glare, saw phantoms on their colleagues' gowns, and got headaches mid-operation while someone's heart sat open in front of them.

In 1914 a San Francisco surgeon named Harry Sherman snapped. He rebuilt his entire operating theater in "spinach green," walls, sheets, towels, gowns, all of it matched to the exact complement of hemoglobin. The ghosts vanished into the fabric. His eyes stopped fatiguing. He could suddenly tell healthy tissue from dying tissue by shades of red his colleagues literally could not see anymore.

Every green scrub on the planet descends from that one man's meltdown.

And red is the worst possible choice by every rule at once. It exhausts the exact cone cells surgery depends on, it summons the ghosts faster, and it makes blood invisible on the fabric, so a soaked, contaminated gown looks freshly laundered.
