What is even taste? Taste is not a constant. And it’s not defined by what you consume only. It’s the skill of sifting through what you’ve seen and instinctively choosing what is not just objectively good but also unique and emotionally resonant.
LLMs are not returning unique curation.
I think one of the greatest privileges of being a designer/creative is getting to find fulfillment in the work itself.
i remember someone once asking me, “how would you feel if something you designed for didn't end up doing well?”
I gave a pretty vague answer at the time
the more i've thought about this question, and the whole growing obsession with optimization, the more i've realized how much people care about ROI, KPIs, and all these metrics we've created to measure how well we're doing. Somewhere along the way, i think we've started conflating measurable success with the value of the work itself.
after a few months of growth and reflection, i think my answer to that question is a lot clearer now.
i care deeply about the quality of my work. i care about making things that feel meaningful to me, things i'm genuinely happy with and proud to put into the world. and of course, i care about whether my clients are happy with what i've delivered too.
that's not to say business performance doesn't matter. it absolutely does! But i don't think how well something performs commercially should determine how happy I am with what I've made.
So, as long as A. I'm proud of my work and B. my client is happy, then the deal is pretty much “optimized” for me. anything beyond that is wonderful, but it doesn't have to define my satisfaction.
and i think that's what's so wonderful about being a creative. to find so much fulfillment in the act of making itself, to care so deeply about something simply because it's meaningful to you :,)
I think when you’re overstimulated you should appear kind of grayed out and no one should be able to interact with you like a locked character in a video game
