Yesterday @DrTedros and I had a constructive and cordial teleconference to discuss his concerns around xenophobia in South Africa.
On the specifics of Dr Tedros tweet:
• We clarified that the tragic deaths of 5 Ethiopian nationals are linked to organised crime within the Ethiopian community in SA, rather than xenophobic violence
• Regarding Mozambican nationals, we noted that reports of 5 deaths are inaccurate at unfortunately 2 have been confirmed, and South African Police is investigating these murders with the utmost seriousness.
The South African government condemns the violent incidences with strongest terms.
We made it clear that these incidents do not reflect the values or position of the South African Government and it’s people.
Those responsible will face the full force of the law, as will anyone exploiting migration concerns to advance political, personal, or criminal agendas.
We also acknowledged that irregular migration is a real challenge for SA one that must be managed humanely and within the framework of the law. The enforcement of the immigration law is for the mandated authorities not private individuals.
The management of immigration challenges requires a continental response on the root cases and the push and pull factors.

As a woman you owe whatever freedom you have to the women before you and you owe the women after you a continuous of such freedom. Yes, you are your sister's keeper and your sister being every woman. No woman is really free unless we all are.
You must always ask yourself which role you are playing in advancing women’s rights.

An important point about this ranking, and this is quite important. I realised as I was talking to @AshrafGarda on SAFM that: WE WON THE INFOWAR. We beat a well-organised international influence operation. I'll explain. A long-ish post.
The Alliance of Democracy report is based on a global survey, conducted in late April 2025. At the time a well-orchestrated international disinformation campaign against South Africa amplified like Trump, Musk et al. with narratives of “white genocide” and "land grabs," was in full swing.
Did it land? Did it destory South Africa's global image?
The ranking is based on "how countries are perceived by their neighbors, key trading partners, and other nations that hold strategic or cultural relevance to them. These perceptions provide valuable insights into how a country’s image is shaped not just globally, but within the specific international circles that most directly affect its interests and influence."
It did not land. We won.
And it is not by accident or a shoddy influence operation. No. It is the result of fearless and tireless digital activism by South Africans who challenged falsehoods, debunked propaganda, and defended the country’s reputation online. Country duty, mtakabawo. Behind the scenes, the strategic work of DIRCO and the Presidency no doubt also helped counter distortions and set the record straight.
So, to every South African who stood up for the truth, engaged in fact-checking, and refused to let lies define our story: this victory is yours. Take a bow. When we close ranks and defend our country: CANNOT BE DEFEATED. I am sure the operation will continue, and so will we. AMANDLA. 🇿🇦
