Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am in a loss of words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early, this was not an age to go.

Zubeen's voice had an unmatched ability to energise people and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled.

Our future generations will remember him as a stalwart of Assam’s culture, and his works will inspire many more talented artists in the days and years to come.

Beyond his music, his connection with people and passion for helping them will always be remembered. I will greatly cherish all my interactions with him.

That magical voice has forever gone silent. Tragic beyond words!

The “Melaisation” of Kamakhya

Kamakhya now faces an existential dilemma of a different kind.

Lakhs have turned up at the Ambubachi Mela this year — and rightly so. This is the time when Ma Kamakhya is believed to menstruate, rest, and bless those who come with a pure heart. The positive vibrations are high, the energy almost tangible. For many, this is a time of prayer, meditation, and inner reflection.

But something has quietly shifted over the years.

Ambubachi has now been marketed in the national context, almost on the lines of Char Dham or Kumbh. That might sound like a good thing, but with it comes an influx of pilgrims, not all of whom are actual devotees. Some travel the country, hopping from one yatra to another — free food, free railway tickets, and a free pass to call it spiritual tourism.

Let’s be real — there are no statistics for this. But the ground reality speaks for itself. Many now come to experience a mela, not seek a moment of silence.

Even some of the temple authorities aren’t thrilled. They never wanted Kamakhya to be sold as a festival zone. But to cater to the growing 'festive' crowd, we now have the Kamakhya Corridor Project — already tangled in legal knots over environmental concerns. Is this development, or just bad copy-paste planning?

I spoke to a few people on the hill — many were YouTubers from eastern India. Their tripods were steady, but their spiritual compass? Not so much.

Meanwhile, sadhus — once revered for their wisdom — now fall into two categories: the meditating kind deep inside the temple, who are true and genuine... and the few ones outside charging ₹50 for a selfie.

Kamakhya is not under physical threat, and no Muslim invasion of Guwahati is on the cards. However, it is currently undergoing an identity crisis.

Does it want to be a space for silence, Shakti, and sadhana?

Or just another spiritual fairground where nomads from other states sell Doraemon balloons?
