I've come to realize people don't want stories, they want character sims. They want characters to act out their own personal vendettas or personalities irregardless if it makes sense for their direction or plot.
i love when a characters backstory is delivered in bits and pieces of dialogue at different instances rather than a whole big chapter/scene dedicated to them. i like when authors dont spoonfeed information and rather just expect you to connect the dots
