A magnet floating above a superconductor is one of the clearest ways to see quantum physics on a human scale.

In 1933, Walther Meissner and Robert Ochsenfeld found that when certain materials are cooled below their critical temperature, magnetic flux is expelled from their interior. Currents near the surface generate a field that opposes the applied field, producing the Meissner state.

This gives superconductors their remarkable magnetic behavior. In type-II superconductors, flux can also become pinned within the material, allowing a magnet to remain stably suspended above it.
