Sir Jim probably got in bed with the Glazers to keep them running Manchester United.

It’s a pity the UK government allowed this to happen to United.

Before 2005, J.P. McManus and John Magnier were major shareholders, but United was largely debt-free and they did not saddle the club with the huge acquisition debt that followed.

Their relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson deteriorated over the Rock of Gibraltar dispute, and they eventually sold their 28.7% stake to Malcolm Glazer.

Glazer then completed the takeover through a leveraged buyout, borrowing heavily to purchase United.

The resulting debt sat within the takeover structure and was ultimately serviced from the club’s revenues.

United went from being largely debt-free before the takeover to carrying significant debt under the Glazers.
