In the Church's eyes, a valid marriage is considered a lifelong bond that humans can't just break.
However, that doesn't mean you are forced to live in a bad situation. Here is how it actually works:
You can separate: If there is cheating or other serious issues, the Church absolutely allows (and sometimes even encourages) a spouse to separate for their own well-being and peace of mind. You aren't required to live under the same roof as someone who betrayed you.
There's also the Annulment Route: This is the big one. Instead of a divorce, you can apply for an annulment. This is a process where the Church looks back at the very beginning of the marriage. If they find that something was fundamentally missing on the wedding day (like a lack of full commitment or honesty), they can declare that a sacramental marriage never truly existed. If you get an annulment, you are free to marry someone else in the Church later.
In all this means that you aren't forced to stay and be mistreated. While the Church holds the ideal that marriage is forever, they do provide paths for people to protect themselves and move on when a spouse breaks those sacred vows.
