I've spent the last day reading bad take after bad take on here about the Frame;
This is moreso me venting out my frustration into the ether, but said than not.. Feel free to scroll past my vent if you want, content will resume soon.
With that out of the way,
Obviously, the price is steep- Valve isn't known to be loss-leading, and market conditions haven't been kind. I will, however, remind everyone that the Quest Pro originally launched at US$1500, before being price-dropped to US$1000 later on in its life-cycle. This tech ain't cheap, no matter how commoditized the Quest lineup has made it seem based on heavy subsidisation from being able to gather advertising data to use in Meta's other ventures.
Battery life seems to be quite standard for anyone who's been on a standalone headset for the last few years; My ol' Quest 2, when it was brand new, could barely do two hours at 72hz. Let alone the 90 & 120hz most of us drive- For comparison, it currently barely lasts 1h30m before I have to plug it in.
I've asked around, as I don't have a Quest 3, but it seems to be pretty much the exact same.
As for the Frame, @\Cade_XR did a test at 72hz Streaming Mode, which they posted; It lasted 2h20m. YMMV obviously (& they expect ~2h10m at 90hz), I however, find it much better than what my current situation allows for.
This is also excluding the fact that both Valve (rumoured), as well as third-party accessory manufacturers (BOBOVR at the very least), are actively working on hot swappable batteries- Something plenty of my friends who use Quest Pros *and* Pimaxes have been doing (Oh, the times they've pretzeled while saying "brb, need to hotswap my battery").
The Frame's mic? No, it's not terrible (as Tested would have you believe in their review). Go check out the "Climbey on Steam Frame Again" video, that was recorded with the Frame's mic, and even shows it in a bad light in the first few seconds, as the dev seemingly covered it while adjusting their headset.
Eye Tracking only supporting gaze is a common theme, too! The Beyond 2e only had gaze tracking at the start, didn't it?
What Valve is doing here, is laying the groundwork for a more open VR/XR ecosystem, one in which personal computing isn't restricted to what the manufacturer wants you to run, and we should be celebrating that, software's got bugs, but that can be improved upon with time. The reason I got annoyed enough to make this, is that people keep recommending "don't buy the Frame, get a Quest Pro instead if you want ET & FT"... Effectively pushing people towards a closed ecosystem on an END-OF-LIFE product which has pretty much no accessories made for it anymore. All you'll find is most likely new-old stock.
At some point, the Quest Pro will be *entirely* EOL, no spare parts for it, your strap's going to break and you'll be holding it together with duct tape, just like all of us with Quest 2's. The software is already getting worse; All I've heard from friends with the QPro have been complaints- Randomly going into passthrough, mic breakage, etc.
To those recommending the Beyond 2e, please understand that it's not a silver bullet; The lighthouse ecosystem is actively dying, Valve's not restocking them whatsoever anymore, Vive's going in-and-out of stock with them constantly, and at some point, they'll become too unaffordable to replace.
Some of us also *need or want* a streaming-capable headset, maybe due to living situations where a pulley system isn't viable for cable management, and not wanting a mess on the floor.
So please, stop echo-chambering about your favourite headsets and keep an open mind. The price sure is absurd, but we live in a world where a kit of 32GB RAM now costs 2000€, food's getting more expensive by the day, and here we are, complaining about a niche of a niche. If you're willing to waste your money on dying ecosystems, be my guest- At least I'm betting on something hackable.
send. freaking. tweet.
@LumiiVRC What most people also forget is that if you already have a Quest 3 or Quest Pro with a fuck-ton of accessories specifically for it, the Frame wont do you much good. But for people like me who want a PCVR headset because I don't have ANY headset, then it's near perfect.
@edmundmcmillen I don't see what the issue with mage is, they have been my strongest character pretty consistently. Maybe I am just extraordinarily lucky with perks.
