India's media is reporting that the MAYDAY message from Air India flight AI171, lasted five seconds and said, “MAYDAY… MAYDAY… MAYDAY… NO POWER… NO THRUST… GOING DOWN…"

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced the formation of a high-level multi-disciplinary panel to investigate the cause of the crash. The panel will assess the circumstances leading to the crash and evaluate existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines currently in place.

40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, is reported to have survived the Air India
crash.

He was seated away from his brother, who remains missing. “There was a huge bang just seconds after takeoff. I ran through smoke and fire.” He is one of the only confirmed survivors so far.
