@praxiss n taking an ethnic studies lens, this is definitely a way to actively decolonize academia. Vocabulary can be such a gatekeeping tool when it comes to knowledge access, so throwing out the thesaurus (not entirely now, we still love literacy) can help bridge hella gaps, imo
@praxiss this thought was at the forefront of my mind all throughout college because i grew sooo fkg tired of the long-winded answers glittered with academic vocabulary. Like, u’d ask a rather simple question and the professor/speaker/student talks abt everything BUT the original++
@praxiss trying to sound like my professors n share my ideas in my natural way, w my natural tone, using my own vocabulary. Ik this paper is abt writing, but i feel the same abt writing, like ya throw a FUCK in there damn
@praxiss fkg question, talking abt theory this n *big ass words* that, and im left thinking “so is that a yes or no?” i definitely felt pressure to use this type of speaking, but because it wasn’t my background i struggled to communicate some of my ideas- so eventually i j stopped++
This is one of my favorite papers because it calls out the biggest bluff in academia: the idea that sounding complicated is the same thing as having “intellectual depth.”
