DENUNCIA de un testigo y un familiar en Tucacas:

Luego de que las autoridades (militares y CICPC) les informaran a los familiares de las víctimas del derrumbe del Hotel La Mar Suites en Tucacas que “ya no había sobrevivientes”, la mayoría de quienes estaban presente se retiró.

Despejada la zona, las autoridades empezaron a llevarse los insumos y las donaciones en camionetas.

Las autoridades fueron emplazadas por algunos testigos sobre el destino de los insumos ya que el único derrumbe en Tucacas era el Hotel La Mar y las camionetas que decidieron irse a La Guaira ya habían partido. Al ser interpelados, los funcionarios respondieron: “Ya estos insumos no pueden devolverse”.

No dieron más detalles. Estaban hostiles. Se llevaron palas, guantes, linternas y medicinas.

De hecho, el familiar que me hace la denuncia me insiste en que desde que ocurrió el desastre las autoridades sabían que ya no había sobrevivientes. Y, aún así, pedían insumos a los familiares, a los que les aseguraban que sí podían encontrar gente con vida.

“Mandaban a comprar insumos a los civiles que estábamos allí. Insumos pediátricos costosos. Y todos desesperados salíamos a comprar porque nos aseguraban que escuchaban voces. Que escuchaban una niña”, me dice el familiar.

Santos, quien fue secuestrado el miércoles por el SEBIN, apareció hoy muerto en una ruta, con evidentes signos de tortura. Este brutal crimen refleja el clima de terror y represión que impone el régimen sobre la oposición.

There are children in prison in Venezuela. Some narratives, complicit in human rights violations, claim otherwise, saying “no,” that “they are not children,” that they are adolescents or merely young people. But that is not true. They are also children, as defined by the official UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Then, those who control the discourse argue that the children “were protesting,” as if that justifies the fact that they have suffered forced disappearances, incommunicado detention, isolation, and have been denied the right to private legal defense. Some have also been victims of torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, including electrocution, humiliation, and forced shaving. They have even been subjected to sexual violence in prison, as reported by the Fact-Finding Mission. A claim often made to cover up these horrors (unsuccessfully) is that they “are going through a judicial process” and that “we must wait for the justice system,” which is supposedly autonomous—a lie in Venezuela. In reality, they have been subjected to virtual trials, where they are sentenced from Caracas via Zoom. Dozens of children who had never met before, who had never seen each other until they were detained, are being tried together in the same case. For this to happen, there is complicity among many officials. This is not the abuse of a few; it is a system designed to instill fear in the population after losing the elections.

All of this has been happening in Venezuela since July 29 until today, under the watchful eye of some complicit, supposedly neutral countries, and people who strengthen the oil business by financing human rights violations against the population. These groups need the submissiveness and silence brought by fear. They are part of the same system.

The children are being accused of terrorism, incitement to hatred, and other charges, even though many parents have shared videos proving that their children were simply on the street—on their own streets, where they go to buy bread or visit friends—when they were violently accosted by officers. The repressive tactics resemble trolling vulnerable people. It is as if there were quotas of detainees to meet arrest numbers predetermined by those in power.

Children are still being held. Even a 16-year-old pregnant girl was mistreated while officials told her she should have an abortion so as not to give birth to any more "terrorists," as reported by El Mundo weeks ago. This was met with indifference from the government and its allies.

Only about 50 children have been released, while international protection agencies have abandoned their mandate to speak out against these abuses.

Around 70 children are still missing, some of them on the autism spectrum or with disabilities. Medical reports and the pleas of their families have gone unheard. Some have become depressed and are speaking of suicide, much like other adult prisoners who are also enduring unbearable conditions. Even more horrifying things have occurred, such as being tricked into seeing a psychiatrist, who turned out to be a disguised official coercing them to accept false charges in court so they could be released sooner. The authorities are desperate to cover up their arbitrary arrests and justify the growing number of complaints against them.

Families report being forced to record self-incriminating videos, confessing to crimes they did not commit. They also claim the authorities want imprisoned children to accuse María Corina Machado and Edmundo González of paying them $30 to protest. This has been a systematic pattern. Mothers from different regions of the country have reported the same thing, despite having no contact with one another. The only explanation is that it’s an order from above.

Children are being imprisoned and tortured, and not a single figure within Chavismo has publicly condemned, criticized, or stopped this. How can this silence be explained? When will the state’s horror against its most vulnerable population end? They have already lost the elections. More and more people outside the country are aware of it, but inside Venezuela, everyone has known it since July 28. They lost in every state and in at least 300 municipalities—90% of the country’s municipalities. Having 2,000 political prisoners will not reverse these results, no matter how many emissaries they send to claim that Venezuela’s problems stem from party disputes or so-called radicals unwilling to compromise.

There are children in prison, and their mothers must bring them food, water, soap, toothbrushes, medicine, and clothes. Everything. Because the state provides nothing. Reports of spoiled food and protein shortages have already emerged. Families are forced to bring supplies, often paying bribes to be allowed to bring these essentials into the prisons. Venezuela is facing a complex humanitarian crisis, and the families of political prisoners bear the heaviest burden of all, as they are still not receiving differentiated attention from the humanitarian organizations present in the country.

Who can you turn to in a situation like this? Only other people and civil society organizations have tried to help, albeit in very limited ways, but the prison system swallows everything. Repression and extortion are bottomless pits. Fathers, mothers, and grandmothers fall into debt, hold raffles, face hardship, and no longer know how to ask for help, as their children lose weight, lose time, and lose their lives while the world debates resolutions.

Many mothers have also lost their jobs because they need to care for their children in prison daily. They have to supply the prisons, yet they do so without being able to see them, without giving them a hug, without knowing a thousand things—without being able to bring them home, heal their wounds, or see them clean. They do not even know if the food they prepared reaches their children or if someone else takes it. These are mothers who wait and despair because their children are not in school. Because the school year has started without them. Because in Venezuela, there are children who are political prisoners, and with them, their families and the country itself are imprisoned.
