Polls repeatedly show the public prefer the housing on the left. Yet they’re given the housing on the right. Why?
My new @Policy_Exchange report, S.M.A.R.T. Density, tries to find the answer and prove how achieving the density on the left could fix the housing crisis.
A thread.
@carastern@stephen_belinda@fordnation The Dutch built bike lanes everywhere because they did the math - adding bike lanes is orders of magnitude less expensive than expanding road capacity. And Holland is also known to have the best *road network* in Europe!
One city’s innovation on housing, migration or extreme weather doesn’t always spread to others. A new initiative is trying to change that https://t.co/gdBq2HjYin via @citylab
@kettlemoraine You probably would appreciate my 'Plex architecture' photo album. Important to note that these buildings are typical for vast areas of the city, not only the 'historic' districts. https://t.co/tjGwM5mbN2
“The burden of cars in cities is huge ...It is also the parking space required, the driving infrastructure, the noise they produce, the toxic materials used in manufacturing and road pavement, the crashes they cause....” https://t.co/RcsqSXrjDq via @YaleE360
@bicyclesmile1 @mbonsma Replace the parking subsidies with public transport passes or some other mobility subsidy if people prefer using active transportation.
@mbonsma @bicyclesmile1 I think that university campuses are perfect 'captive' markets for bike-share programs. And government workers would be another good target market. If all federal employees in Ottawa automatically paid a $25 fee for bike-share membership, just imagine the possibilities!
